Xiaomi MIUI Battery Problems with Google Duo Update

Evening all, as many OzBargainers have Xiaomi phones running MIUI I thought it best to post the following to hopefully assist others with a problem which has been occurring over the past few days.

Across my family we have 3 Redmi Note 4/4X phones. In the last few days all of the phones have been running hot with the battery completely draining from 100% down to zero in 1-2 hours.

My initial thought was that the Chinese government had finally activated their Xiaomi botnet to bring down Trump, however it appears that a recent update to Google Duo has issues with MiUI 9.

As a result, the phone was intensely using the CPU (even when asleep). At times it was draining the battery faster than the phone could charge, and turning off wifi and mobile data was the only way to get the phone to cool down and stop battery drain.

To fix the issue:
* Head to Settings > Installed Apps > Duo
* Select the option to Uninstall Updates, confirm to uninstall all updates
* Go to google play store
* Search for duo
* Click the Google Duo app from the results
* Click the … at the top of the screen
* Untick auto update

I fear the cause of the issue may be an incorrectly implemented system API in MIUI as this has only been effecting our Xiaomi phones.

Hopefully this helps other Xiaomi users out there, as this fix was successful on all three of our Xiaomi phones, bringing all the phones effectively back from the dead.
