Tech Mall matching Shopping Express. Will we see any more price drops?

Purchasing the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB from Shopping Express will also come with Assassin's Creed Odyssey via Redemption

    Tech Mall/PC Byte isn't a Participating Re-seller

    • Just removed that part!

Just a warning. I bought a samsung 860 evo from them. arrived yesterday. They said they don't have any game coupons.
I don't see why. If they buy 100 drives, they should have 100 coupons. I feel they're selling the coupons online or something.

      • +1

If I buy from suppliers I get game codes so you're probably right.

  • +6

    I
    REALLY
    SHOULD
    STOP
    BUYING
    SSDs

    • +8

Or… be more Generous with what you have.

Eg, go help some charity speed-up some of
      their computers…

    • The 1TB will be less than $100 soon enough, at this rate.

      • $200 I meant to say.

        • +2

The price dropping is really surprising. I paid $200 for a 500GB Samsung Evo 860 (best price at time) in February!

        • I got one from pccg for $199 in that deal.

  • So, Brain Trust, is there any reason these
would Not work in & speed-up those used
(sorry: Refurbished) Dell i5 computers, of
    a recent Deal…?

    Silly:
    . $116 for a Computer &
. $106 for an SSD for it

    “When I install a 2-way radio
in my car, I double it’s value!” ;~)

    • +2

Just get a small cheap SSD as a boot drive for $30-$40 for those cheap PC’s

    • +1

Will make a huge difference going from a regular drive to a SSD for your OS drive.

    • +1

I did just that with one of the western digital deals a few weeks back - swapped out the old hard disk for an SSD and it boots like a dream. Previously it was the hard disk chunking along at 100% that slowed it down, so if yours is doing the same the SSD should make a massive difference.

  • +2

I'm amazed by how much faster my laptop
is after installing this. Boots four times as fast and has stopped hanging during use completely

      Welcome to 2018

    Someone called?

  • +1

I am looking for smaller than this i.e. 120, 128 GB SSD as already bought the above one 500GB in PODCAST deal
However missed that Intel thing for $29 :(
Please apprise in case you guys come across any.
    Cheers

    • +2

      Damn.. $29 would be awesome..
I need to upgrade my HTPC as it only 60GB and keeps running out of room.. 128GB would be heaps.

Who is more reliable in terms of warranty tech mall or shopping Express.

  • Sorry dumb question, does this come with HDD enclosure so just plug'n'play or do I need to buy separate enclosure?

    • +3

"Internal Solid State Drive SSD" is what is listed on the ebay description. So you'll need an enclosure if you wish to use this as an external storage otherwise place it in your laptop/pc if you have a spare 2 1/2" bay.

      • +1

Miss that bit 'Internal' .. apology and thanks!

  • +1

For some reason it won’t allow me to apply the coupon?

Anyone else having the same issue?

  • +2

    In 2011, I purchased a 250GB SSD for $500.

    Times be changing.

    • +1

Lol soon you will be paying $500 for a 10tb SSD
      never ending.

  • +1

Dang, these prices are making disk drives obsolete.

What's the approximate life expectancy of an ssd before errors / failures start?

    • +2

I bought an OCZ 120GB SSD in about 2010 (for $190) and a few years ago swapped it into my server, so it runs 24/7. Still going strong with no errors showing on Crystal Disk.

OCZ were not rated as high in reliability or performance, but I am happy with it.

You have to understand that SSDs don't have any sort of MTBF because there is no possible mechanical failure in the drive. Instead, SSDs are rated on TBW (TeraBytes Written). Currently an SSD can easily push 100x its max capacity in writes before failure will start to occur (and that would be the lower limit and pretty rare). These numbers are reinforced by the fact that manufacturers are giving out ridiculous TBW thresholds before warranty is null and void.

As an example, this 500GB has a warranty of 300 TBW while the 1TB model has a 600 TBW warranty (both also include 5 years). This means you could literally write 164GB PER DAY for FIVE YEARS STRAIGHT (on the 500GB model) or 328GB PER DAY for FIVE YEARS STRAIGHT (on the 1TB model) before you hit the warranty limits.

My 1TB Samsung 840 EVO from ~2012 currently has 34556 hours of uptime and ~81 TBW. Still sitting pretty on 0 uncorrectable errors and 0 unrecoverable sectors while the speeds haven't wavered since day one.

  • I am after an advise. I have a Macbook pro with 750GB normal hard disc. Can I put this 1TB SSD to my laptop? Will it increase the speed of my laptop? Any pros and cons of switching to SSD? Thank you!

    • +1

Yes, 7mm thickness. The 750gb is probably 9.5mm. Use CCC to copy it using a USB enclosure first and whip the drive out, replace it with the SSD. Youtube has plenty of videos on how to do this.

There used to be an issue with one version of MacOS (High Sierra possibly) that would not activate TRIM for non-Apple SSD. You can force it on now I believe.

      • +1

Thanks for that! What's the difference between EVO & PRO? Is EVO good enough?

        • Definitely - the Sata interface with the EVO or PRO is almost fully saturated at around 550MB/s. That spindle would be around 20-25% of that on a good day.

Wouldn't buy the pro - assume you'll get 3 good years from your mac with the EVO and possibly time to upgrade to NVME solution (depending on what you use your mac for)

        • I am going to order a 1TB for my PC and s 500gb for my laptop.

I am also not sure to get EVO or PRO

          • +1

@GerrardLFC: Get the EVO. The main advantage of the Pro is its somewhat better write endurance and performance, but these factors really don't matter to 99% of users.

The EVO, under normal use, will last decades. And the performance of both are orders of magnitude better than hard drives - the few percentage points seperating the EVO and Pro will be impossible to notice outside of benchmarks.

            • @JMC: Thanks JMC. My first SSD drives :D

    • +2

      YES and YES.

I've done to all my macbooks. some even have 2 SSD (with SSD caddy replaces DVD/CD-rom) in it.

I highly recommend SSD upgrade with this prices.

  • +1

Why the 2 and 4TB versions not getting cheaper?

    • They will, give it time

  • LOL some dude ordered x30 units of the 500gb SSD

  • I messaged them and according to them they aren't even part of the free game promotion…
