Best Gaming Laptop between $1500-$2000?

Hi all,
Asking for a friend,
What's the best gaming laptop deal under $2000 right now?
Should I wait for good deals? e.g black friday

Thanks in advance for help.

  • This deal is pretty great and well below budget: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/409976

Add an extra 8GB of RAM and 2nd HDD or SSD

  • I pointed a friend this way yesterday

Honestly I don't know a lot about them but seems like the best dollar to performance ratio laptops I could find.

    • I have a metabox laptop. It's great. Runs a little warm and mine is an ultra thin. I'd definitely consider buying a cooling pad with it.

  • Hi Smogul, does your friend have any preferences? It would help in narrowing down the results.
    - Do they need the laptop to be light/portable, is portability not a concern, or are they looking for a desktop replacement?
    - What screen size do they want? 13-14", 15", 17"?
    - Which one would they prefer: QHD resolution + 60hz refresh rate, or FHD resolution + 120/144hz refresh rate?
    - Do they game using the keyboard and mouse, or do they prefer to use a controller?
    - What kind of games do they play? What's the most graphically-intensive game that they play?
    - Do they care about aesthetics? Do they like flashy RGB lights, or a more subdued design? Is a plastic body fine, or would they prefer metal?

    • Hi,
Portability is not a concern. He prefers it light weight though.
      Screen preferably 15" or above.
      Prefer FHD + 120/144Hz
      Keyboard and mouse, not controller.
Games he mainly plays: Black ops 4, RS6. He plays lots of new AAA games.
He doesn't care about RGB lights. Plastic body is fine.

And yes, he just recently sold his desktop gaming PC as he stays at my house Thursday/Friday/Saturday then goes back to his parents every week.

      • +1

For his needs and price range, aim for device with a GTX 1060 6GB. A 1050ti is cheaper but far less powerful, and while a 1070 is more future-proof, many compromises in other areas need to be made to bring the price below $2000.

If your friend needs a laptop ASAP, you can't go wrong with a Metabox. If he can wait, eBay has 20% off sitewide sales every so often.

Here's a pretty nice deal, as long as he doesn't mind having last year's processor: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Express-Free-MSI-GE63VR-7RE-259A…

In terms of brands, MSI is decent, Acer and Alienware are alright. Asus ROG is a mixed bag - some models are good, others aren't. Dell's G series use underclocked GPUs so they are not recommended. Stay away from Lenovo and HP. Razer is out of the question because they're just way too expensive.

        • I think that's the best one so far. Might settle on it!
          Thanks a heap!
