  • Woah that card looks hella weird.
I'm looking for an upgrade for my RX480 8GB, worth upgrading or should I wait for navi?

    • +6

Yeah, definitely has a sir Elton feel about it. It performs well, and is excellent bang for buck.

      • For some reason the first thing I saw were robot eyes.
It says it needs a 700w PSU though so I doubt my super old 500w PSU can run it. Ahh so many upgrades -_-

      • laughed out loud on the elton john bit.

I bought a ASUS ROG 1080TI like 2 mths before the 2080TI came out.. literally never bought a top GFX card in my life but a) I'm old now and can afford it and b) it was on OZBARGAIN for an amazing price.. I felt kind of bad but man the 2080s alone are $1500 and the 2080TI is like $2000, and I would not have spent either of those amounts. Please also that the 2080 is on par with the 1080TI anyway.

But $2k just for card, thats too much man, when my son is a teenager there is no way id be buying an (equivalent) $2000 video card to play video games. I get the super rich people but man that's like $4k rig to get the CPU etc to go with it.. for any middle-class that's too much.

Gaming is supposed to be fun but some of these prices… wow…If im some 10-20 yo kid don't know where I'm supposed to get this kind of money for gaming end rant

        • What do you expect for latest and greatest?

Newest OLED tvs are an arm and a leg when launched too.

          Goes for everything

  • Not a bad price for a non-blower. Grabbed one of the MSI ones from the last deal for $440, it performs really well (albeit a bit loud). This would perform similarly but I assume reasonably quiet like most cards since it has 2 fans.

    • I have a reference RX480. Not the same thing nor nearly as bad but I sort of understand the pain you're going through.

      • Not really pain, ha! I love it :) I always play with headphones so I don't notice the noise. Even at max it isn't as bad as people say. Though my case has decent sound dampening (Define C)

        • I have a budget corsair case so it's not so well for me. On idle it's much quieter than a wraith spire cooler which is all I hear but on load…oh boy. I also wear closed back headphones but often I contemplate upgrading the GPU purely for the noise. I'm a bit of a noise freak you see I like there to be silence.

          • @Ostrk: High end cases usually help a lot with noise levels.

            • @Diji1: Silent cases are often at 100-200 range which is a bit too much for me. I'd rather just buy a new quiter GPU instead.

      • I had an R9 290X reference card. Trust me, the Vega 56 and RX 480 stock coolers are nothing compared to the R9 290X stock cooler. My cooler was louder than the vacuum cleaner when it was under full load.

        • Hahaha I was gonna buy an R9 290 stock on gumtree one day and I looked up a youtube video of the noise and I honestly was genuinely shocked at how loud it was. Instantly said thanks bye and bailed. In that regard yes my RX480 is absolutely nothing but it's still a lot compared to most cards.

          • @Ostrk: You dodged a bullet my friend. I spent over $600 on the R9 290X on launch day and I couldn't live with the stock cooler (yes, it's that bad), so I had to invest another $400 in a full water cooling setup. It turned out being a very expensive upgrade.

            • @p1 ama: I'm never buying a stock cooler again. My RX480 throttles in some games despite me upping the fan speed higher than default and undervolting it without any other changes. 2500rpm is the loudest I can set it without being heavily bothered and it still throttles. Even with the temp limit set at default! (90c, yes the RX480 default temp limit is 90c) No it's not a power throttle I tested it's a temp throttle.
On the upside, if people do want a jet engine in their house they can get one for really cheap. I've seen blower R9 290s for under $100 (This was June 2018)

              • -1

@Ostrk: Yep, AMD stock coolers are just garbage. At least Nvidia has figured this one out. This is coming from someone who owns both AMD and Nvidia cards.

                • @p1 ama: I just replaced the thermal paste on the rx480. Somehow it was actually dried up after just two years of usage. Probably from running hot af 24/7.
While it did help temps, it still throttles in a select few games.

  • I just bought a $639.20 Vega 64 from eBay. Perhaps I should have went with this instead… oh well.

Fingers crossed my 730 watt PSU can handle the 295 watt beast.

    • But your one is Asus Strix. I was thinking to upgrade my R9 280 to 1080 ti.
Will this card good value for money?

      • +1

vega 56 is the best bang for buck in Australia. If you want to game at 1440p it will start to struggle with high settings and more so in the future. The 1070ti is great value elsewhere but the Australia Tax and the lack of 1080's has made them a bit expensive.
You can buy a top model RTX 2080 such as the MSI Tri fan with the ebay 20%, which performs a lot better than the reference, for the same money as a 1080ti. When the 2080ti becomes properly available we should see the 2080's drop a bit in price. AMD may drop their pricing some more, or even sneak out a new card and that would put more pressure nvidia - people have been waiting so long for a purchase that many are buying the vega's and RX580's because they have dropped to better value and will do until next year and we find out where AMD will be.

        • RTX 2080 is still around 1300 or so with discounts due to price jacking during sales.
Thinking to go for Xbox X taken prices or Gaming cards and rigs is going astonishing high and games are not that cheap either for PCs. Happy to pay for gold for multi player.

          • @EnALup: Which is for a top end model and the same price as the 1080 ti's. There was one the other day for $1050/$1150. A a lot of 1080 ti's are still listed for $1600+.

A $300 GPU will get you more power than the consoles. PC games are very cheap. There are specials all the time and non latest can be picked up for $5-$10 often. 75Hz+ monitors are awesome and you can't get that with consoles. I have my monitor overclocked to 80Hz and can't stand 60Hz now.

            • +1

@Major Mess: Problem is that there's nothing right now you can build for $500 that would outperform the Xbox One X. Sure a $300 GPU could be better than the one in the Xbox but what about the rest of the components? not to mention the small form factor of the One X.

              • @Ostrk: True. Not sure how Microsoft is making money out of console. GPU in it is compared to RX580 or 1060 with more memory. Will it justify spending $1500 or $2000 on a decent rig compared to xBox taken I play with my xBox controller on PC as well.

                • @EnALup: Economies of scale?
But that would beg another question, how many do they even sell? I highly doubt it's as much as the PS4 Pro.
I think a very likely possibility is simply the fact that AMD gave Microsoft a contract they couldn't refuse. Securing AMDs partnership for next gen consoles which I suspect they may go all out on now that I feel console gamers would be willing to pay more for more performance.

    • +2

The power requirements of AMD cards are astronomical, I should probably wait with my RX 570 until they sort this mess out or just build a 1080 Ti 9th gen system next year or something LOL.

  • +6

"You won't be able to use ray tracing, but let's be real, even the NVIDIA 2080ti can't really use ray tracing either"- Brutal LOL

  • 440 a few days ago….

    • +2

That for the blowers cards. Only one fans. This one has two.

  • Get much Extra perfomance out of the non-blower cards?

Besides sound is it really worth an extra $40?

    • +1

Additional improved thermal performance besides sounds.

    • +1

It has lower base clock and lower boost clock compared to the MSI Air Booster that was $440… that said it probably doesn't have vacuum level noise

    • +1

I have a blower R9 290 - it's loud. I usually have headphones on but it annoys the family and its really loud, not even just for a graphics card its just loud. I'm wanting to upgrade mostly just for a quieter card.

    • +1

“Hey, laser lips, your mama was a snow blower.“
(Yes, I Googled for it. Didn't want to spoil it with the obvious quote)

  • this should be around 430 as well.

    • Yeah but with nvidia holding the high price there is no pressure. Everything is in a semi-holding pattern.

  • Love it! thanks OP!!!!

  • picked one up for little brother

    • my big brother told me to (profanity) off today

  • Great value for money and if you have an opaque cover for your case then you won't have to look at the eye sore of a design.
