COTD - Surge protector

There is a Surge Protector sale on right now.
Last time they had a BELKIN brand with "unlimited insurance" which I didn't buy because I thought it must be more than what they described to claim the warranty if something did happen. Now that there is a Surge Protector with no brand, provides up to $150,000 worth of insurance within 12 months. Can someone provide some insight to how these insurance work? I mean these deals seem too good to be true, and I am very skeptical on how they describe their item without providing fine prints.

  • I've got two of these, they are pretty cheap units. I wouldn't hold too much hope of them protecting your equipment.

If you are concerned about your equipment, and your insurance does not cover that scenario, you are better off buying the BELKIN gear.

  • aldi are offering something on the 24th march for $25 http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_17346.htm. it doesn't mention insurance so i assume it doesn't provide any.

  • So far noone has answered my question.
Does anyone know how the insurance policies work with these surge protectors?
Some say unlimited warranty. What does that mean?
Some offer $xxx, xxx amount of insurance. Under what condition and/or cause does that cover, in affect how do you claim etc etc?

    • insurance policies differ. you need to read the fine print. usually the policies are quite restrictive and you need to nominate equipment, up front by serial number registration, that is to be covered by the policy. contact the manufacturer to find out the policy details.

  • The last one I got off COTD ended up melting. Was wondering why it was so cold in my room when the heater was supposed to be on. The socket had melted and the area around the switch was all warped and melted as well. Not sure if their insurance would've covered anything since I already threw the packaging away ages ago.

    • lol why were you running a heater off a surge board?

      • Was cold, needed a power switch, only one I could use :)

  • I have a bosston surge protector, has worked well for the past 2 years. Sturdy built, had a few blakcouts recently at my place an seems to work well.
