ABOUT THIS GAME

Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised Underground. Having never ventured beyond your Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind.

    fantastic game
    played it twice :)

Excellent game, if you have some spare time, well worth the pickup.

  • Nice. I’ve got the redux version. Not sure what the differences look like though

    • +1

I have only played the Redux version, but would recommend acquiring that on sale instead. It has someimprovements to enemy AI and allows purchasing weapon customizations like extended barrels, silencers, laser sights…

I strongly recommend reading the novel(in English translation) first; there is also an audiobook in English. The game's enviroment is the same but there is only about a 50% similarity in the plot. It is interesting to compare the differences.

I also recommend reading Roadside Picnic

        • Thanks for the recommendation.

Apparently there are about 50 novels set in the Metro universe, but only the 3 by Glukovsky are available to use Anglophones… The Witcher novels were another foreign series that took a while to get translated into English.

They actually (profanity) up a lot of the styling in the redux tbh. It looks and mostly plays nicer but it lost a chunk of atmosphere and character tbh.

No hate, love these games, just worth pointing out.

    • Redux has bug fixes and visual upgrades, lighting better improved character models and maps etc

  • Free to keep or free to try for 24 hours?

    • Pretty sure it's a keep afterwards since it adds it to your account

    • Free to keep. The price is set to $0 for 24hrs. If you 'purchase' in that time its added to your library.

This is the a pretty common steam store thing for older successful games. Has happened for both L4D and L4D2 to name a couple.

  • Is there are official post saying Keep forever? 24 hours is unclear if is more that trial.

    • I'm pretty sure once it's tied to your Steam account it's a permanent copy. Enjoy the game :)

Couldnt get into this game despite my best to try and embrace it as it had good potential.
Extreme lack of ammo and oxygen masks, they've made the player under-powered against 90% of the enemy AIs above the surface.
Had to call it quits on the game ~ 15% progress..

    • Tried playing on easier difficulty? I'm no eSports pro but I managed to complete it twice without dieing more than a dozen times on normal difficulty…

      Maybe you just suck :P

      • Not wrong though. Literally ammo and filter galore on normal mode. Not to mention you're a bullet sponge.

        • Agreed. It's a tiny bit harder than your average CoD game, but still fine on normal difficulty for all but absolute beginners. The harder difficulties is where it gets really interesting!

          • @Zenskas:

The harder difficulties is where it gets really interesting!

I think you mean fun. Can't play anything on normal. Ranger Hardcore for first playthrough, erry day.

    • Yeah, if you're playing Ranger Hardcore it's meant to be. Normal mode is literally a cake walk with almost unlimited ammo and gas mask filters. Shit, even on Ranger Hardcore I've only ever run out of ammo a handful of times.

    • I went through both 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux on Ranger Hardcore for the first time and really liked it. Also it is a survival horror game and on higher difficulties it becomes really hard to manage ammo and med kits so it may just not be your cup of tea

Went along to get it and got a "Metro 2033 is already in your Steam library"…
    Horder…

      Same…

I wonder when I got it, I don't even remember. Probably some other free deal.

  • Love adding free games I'll never play while riding on the train. Cheers!

Try playing them at home instead :)

  • Top Draw

Play it in 3D if you can, it's one of the best 3D games in terms of 3D working without high levels of artifacts.

    • Do you mean VR?

      • No, with a 3D TV as display and a 3D capable video card.
WoW is also awesome like that.

    • +2

Wow I forgot this even existed.

  • The new Metro is supposed to be really good

    • The new one isnt out till Feb, who knows it's good?

  • I just cant get myself to play it, past the whole tunnel area, its just too grim and dull. This is coming from someone who enjoyed STALKER.

The Redux Collection is on sale for $10.18 USD. Includes Metro 2033 Redux, Metro Last Light Redux.

  • Good game, i got stuck at one point in the game though and my save point doesn't take me any further back so i gave up, good game otherwise though lol

    • Let me guess, ran out of air looking for something outside?

      • nope

  • After some errors and retries, now it says….. SUCCESS. Thanks OP.

  • Any free game deserve a +ve :)

  • Thanks!

  • This game is so good I’ve played it countless times on the difficulties, there’s also a ‘goodness’ meter which changes your endings.

  • So the go to deal doesn't take you to Metro 2033 just the steam store, a search reveals "Metro 2033 Redux" for $6.79, "Metro Last Light" for $6.79, "Metro Redux Bundle" for $10.18 - Has this deal expired?

  • Missed that but I already have it under my account don't know when.
