Went from a M7 to a M8 then HTC died out. This HTC 12+ looks very promising.

I don't own this device but if the predecessor is anything to go by, it is no mystery why HTC is no longer one of the top players.
The only things the U11+ had going for it (in my experience) were the great battery life, great audio and camera. And oh, the fingerprint scanner was wicked fast and more reliable than the ones in my other devices, past and present.
The software experience left a lot to be desired. I had bluetooth, audio and WiFi bugs that persisted through a couple of updates. HTC Sense, while light on resources looked dated. Built-in HTC apps like the dialer and messages looked exactly like the ones I had on the One M8. The LED notification isn't RGB (and tiny too) which was a bummer.
I don't get how the U12+ can be considered an upgrade when it doesn't have traditional buttons and has reduced battery capacity.

You can change the software experience?? Just put on a stock Google launcher.
Granted the bugs will stay, but the outdated look will go.

I loved HTCs phones - the M8 was amazing. But they didn't really keep up so in the end it was no surprise that they fell behind.

A phone's launcher is like 1/10th of the software experience.

That's why I stopped considering them years ago.

Never a model comparable to the competition without one major flaw.

They never seem to grasp that you need to be better than the competition, or cheaper than the competition.

for software experience, except pixel, the other brands are all the same Samsung, HTC, LG and sony. I believe HTC is one of the better one among them.

Still use the m8 as a spare remote cos of IR blaster.

God phones are so expensive nowadays.

Guess, it is time to upgrade my phone.

Seeing how this person has a phone which can call heaven.

While, my phone is unable to get a signal in a newly developed area.

  • This vs the P20 Pro?

    • P20 Pro hands down beats this

    I love my 10.

Headphone port, good enough audio, not too big. Only one ongoing software issue and that's the screen not always respecting brightness, although it's better than it used to be (now it always changes, but there's still a lag)

Would never pay $900 though. $500-600 tops. I guess 128gb makes it worth more

    • But the battery life is horrible. After the recent update, it goes to random restart loops when the battery is <25%. Haven't figured out to a way to fix it. The only thing that can be done to "temporarily" break the loop is to hook it up to the charger.
But the sound quality is amazing!

I don't understand all this software thing with phones.
So long as it turns on and when i press call it works, same with SMS and the Internet. What else do people need the phone for.

    • Based on reviews:
HTC spams you with notification from apps that you can not uninstall -> bloated software, per reviews.
Not best in class software optimisation. For example people craving about Pixel line is due to the fact Google also develop the OS, their optimisation is great and Pixels feel smoother than phones with much better hardware. OnePlus pretty much ride on this when they focus on hardware and pure Android as their selling point.
Software does offer terrific result example Google camera. Frankly at $900 price mark you are expecting more than just answer call, receive SMS or open the web browser. Heck, sliding through dozens of web page while surfing on Pixel feels really smooth.
Also the fact that HTC is on the way out meaning you getting less security patch and software warranty, they simply can't afford going forward if their situation doesn't turn around. $900 is a lot for a phone that can't guarantee support. Samsung has been on a roll lately due to new Google agreement that forced maker to update at least 4 times a year for any one model selling more than 100k.
Again, $900 is a lot and don't forget this is a sale price. If this was priced like Xiaomi or OnePlus i.e around $700-$800 RRP people would be all over it and ignore the software weakness.

If you don't care about software something like Samsung J series at $200-$300 would be saving you heaps as it's got all you need. Call, SMS, Internet, B28, NFC and Samsung Pay.

This looks like a Pixel 3 with better hardware and way worse software (which is what makes Pixel great), that's my impression.

  • Bought one, thanks! Wish it was slightly cheaper but under $1000 for a flagship phone is becoming rare these days.
HTC has been decent with their software in the last few years with not much bloat and generally better RAM management compared to Samsungs. Also read on Whirlpool that a new update has just been rolled out so hope they keep it coming.
Pity there's only one colour available to choose from here but am happy with the translucent blue.

  • I got stuck with samsung bixby briefing alarm , cant change to any other brands …. are they any apps out there that can have different (auto) nice alarm tone depends on the weather and read out the time in the morning with a nice voice, not robotic voice?
