Deadline to Lodge Your Own Tax Return Is Tomorrow 31 October 2018

Thought it would be worth noting to those who haven't yet lodged their 2018 income tax returns and intend to lodge it themselves, the deadline to lodge the return is tomorrow 31 October 2018.

If you are not ready to lodge your own return by tomorrow, you can either get an accountant to add you on their system so that you will get an extension or you can call the ATO directly and explain your extenuating circumstances and hope to get an extension.

The last few years I have done it late online.
Online lodging stays active until the end of May the following year.

You will only be charged a late fine if you owe the ATO money.
If you get a refund (ie they owe you), you won't get a fine.

I always have a few extra dollars in tax taken out of my pay each week so I always overpay tax each year.
Then zero stress about lodging a few months late.

Yes of course you can, in fact, if the ATO owes you a refund, they don't care when you submit it because they are keeping your money. If however you owe them money they may charge interest or a penalty.

        • I can vouch. I just did my FY 16/17 return today and it went through without a hitch because they owe me $3000. I doubt they'd be as understanding if the shoe was on the other leg.

  • " explain your extenuating circumstances and hope to get an extension."

not need to hope i believe its 101% chance they will grant. just say you are busy or taking holiday soon. or probably they wont ask.

    • If you have been late in the past, have had ATO initiated audits, have not paid your tax bill in time, these will jeopardise your ability for the ATO to grant an extension.

Also, asking for an extension this year lowers your chances of getting extensions in the future.

If you have a tax agent then you will usually have till May next year. Tax agent fees can be claimed as an expense.
