Divinity: Original Sin 2 is easily one of my all time favourite games and is very rarely on sale. If you have not purchased it yet, I would highly recommend it.
Having a well deserved 93 Metacritic Score I can not recommend it enough if you haven't played it. I would recommend getting a few friends to play along too, although it's very enjoyable by yourself.

Definitely great game. Even though I bought a few games in between i find myself coming back to it.

This is the historical lowest price, and like everyone else here, I highly recommend the game; easily have more than 100hours played co-op, we've missed a bit of side quests so we're planning on doing another run but higher difficulty along with mods, and taking the story to another direction.
The game is mostly voiced, and you're given a fair bit of freedom to do whatever
Do I need to have played the first game to follow what's going on? Or is it reasonably standalone, with some references to the previous game's characters and events?
Its standalone, at least as much as I follow the story anyway.
Unless you like reading Wikis you'll have no clue what's going on.
This game has a much better flow than the first game and is fine standalone. I'm about 2/3 way through and loving it.

Highly recommend the game too. I've played through the game 3 times now and its still a great experience. Perfect for co-op as well.
