TGG eBay Charged Shipping for out of State but My Local Store Had Stock?

So basically I ordered an item off TGG eBay around 10pm and they charged me almost $60 for shipping because the local stores had no stock. I got a call the next morning and they had stock in my local store? Is that allowed? They basically charged me shipping for out of state when the item I bought was available locally and ready for dispatch 9am. I tried C&C on eBay but they showed no stock. Unethical? Or is that actually allowed.

Did they tell you the shipping cost before you paid, and did you agree to pay for the shipping cost they quoted?

It could be the local shop had an order cancelled, and figured you'd want your order faster.

In the end it doesn't matter - even the local shop needs their products shipped from somewhere.

    • I tried C&C but it showed no stock all over NSW, and said that it would be coming from VIC. I ordered at 10pm. Received order confirmation at 8am. Received a call at 9am and they said they have stock available at my local TGG.

I figured if they didn’t have stock online in NSW then they wouldn’t have stock in store, so ordering it from VIC sounded like the only option.

      • Where do you get to pick the specific store to order from? TGG has just the one online ordering system don't they?

        But ultimately:

        1. You paid for the goods + shipping, expecting to receive it sometime later.

        2. You're now receiving the goods even earlier, for the same price.

You're ahead than where you'd be otherwise. They're not messing with their inventory system to try and grab a few dollars off you, if that's what you're worried about.

I think he is complaining that the only reason he choose the shipping option is because no local stores had stock according to the good guys ebay.

He would have picked it up instore and avoided the delivery fee if the ebay good guys stock inventory was working properly.

          • @ozhunter: I'm pretty sure that's not how eBay's click and collect system works though, is it? OP also says he "bought from Victoria" - how do you even do that on eBay?

But ultimately the result is the same. Even if TGG had stock in Sydney, they can decide they don't want to sell that via eBay (to preserve stock for walk in customers) or just as part of inventory management.

        • Follow this link to see the item that I purchased LINK.

If you put in a postcode for Syd (2000) for C&C, there's no stock anywhere. So i'm only left with the option of shipping and no C&C.
Then going onto TGG actual website, they have stock at every store in Syd and shipping is $35 as opposed to their $54.94.

Overall, I understand that I ended up with a discount for the item that I purchased as compared to its original RRP, so i'm at no loss, but its just the fact that they had local stock and charged me for the shipping that didn't happen.

          • @chewie96: Transactions on eBay is costing jb hifi more than their own online store. It’s reasonable for jb hifi to cover the extra cost by charging different s&h.

  • tGG eBay has been rubbish recently. I had an order cancelled by the store but eBay had no status updates. It's been over a week now. Chasing for a refund.

    • Order not received, paypal claim?

  • Yeah got to wait at least 7 days for that. I know it will get refunded eventually. Lucky I ordered another unit for pickup at another store and that the coupon was still valid.

  • Had the same, but it was “fulfilled” by the local store, meaning ng the local store was arranging the delivery. My order was to Sydney (northern beaches) ex Essendon but fulfilled by Chatswood store , but the product (a fridge) came from their warehouse in western Sydney (milpera?)

  • The shipping goes to Ebay, their terms of condition of sale are different to TGG. I had a similar discussion with TGG online dept who told me that Ebay set the delivery fees and they are not changeable or refundable by TGG. Ebay TGG store trades separately to TGG, Ebay just send the order to the closest TGG store for delivery. This is all according to them.

  • Ordered a new washer, with store pick up, got call 45 minutes later telling me it was available for pickup. The system worked fine for me.

You paid for shipping to your house, not shipping from a VIC store to NSW store. How do you even know that it came from VIC? I've ordered from TGG before, even though they had no stock, they said they could get it in from a warehouse by the next day. I assume this is what happened to you.

I don't see anything unethical going on here. You paid for an item (with shipping to your house), and you got an item (with shipping to your house). Perhaps TGG's inventory system is crap, but I don't see how this remotely is "not allowed".

  • I asked them this today, they responded with:

    Thanks for your message.

  • This has been happening in the last few sales they've had. They're making money on postage. It's not illegal though.

  • Paid postage on an item that was supposed to have no local stock, in the end local store contacted to say they had stock and was I able to collect from them same day. They could not refund the postage but provided store credit to the equivalent amount.
