Thoughts or Comparisons on Nokia 6.1?

So I’ve been in the market for a new phone ever since my iPhone 5S started having some charging problems, and been thinking of getting an android because I prefer the customisability to the user-friendliness of iPhones.

A Nokia 6.1 seems to sit around ~$300 on eBay and has everything from NFC to Band 28 and Android One with a decent snapdragon processor as well, plus apparently it’s a fairly hardy phone which was why I got the iPhone 5S in the first place.

If I’m going to be using it for basic things like calls, messaging, checking Facebook and reddit casually as well as a bit of game emulation from NES to NDS would this be the best option? I’ve seen a lot of people for other phones and I was curious about if they have any massive plus sides I’m missing out on?

TL;DR Need new phone, thinking Nokia 6.1 dual-sim from eBay, any better bang for my buck?

  • I have the Nokia 6.1 (TA-1068), I have no complaints with it, although I haven't tried anything to intensive on it like games/emulation. But all the basic stuff works just fine. As a bonus it has USB-C charging but still has a legacy 3.5mm headphone jack!

  • I have a Nokia 6.1 and so does a colleague at work. In general, we like our phones, but they both have the same problem - reminders do not always work. Sometimes they sound at the right time, sometimes they sound minutes or hours later, and sometimes they don't sound at all, making reminders absolutely useless.

Our phones upgraded to Android 9 Pie on Tuesday night, and it's possible that this problem has been fixed - I've just set a repeating reminder for tonight to see what happens now.

I also have a problem with mine that tapping on the screen doesn't always wake up the phone. When this happens, I have to press the power button momentarily to wake it up instead. I haven't asked my colleague if he has the same problem.

    • Android 9 Pie on the Nokia 6.1 still seems to have the same problem with reminders. The reminder I set for 9:30pm last night went off 20 minutes late.

  • I bought 2 of these 2 weeks ago for my parents for $350 each at JB Hifi. Great phone for the price. Good RAM. Great screen. NFC, reasonable camera.

Android One is a huge plus. The UI is clean and uncluttered. Pure Android experience. I really cannot fault it. I spent probably a week reading reviews before settling on this as the best option for my 60+ parents, who were respectively using a Samsung S5 mini and iPhone 4 before.

Transitioning from the iPhone to the Android with contacts etc was a little annoying but that's par for the course.

  • I was recently in the market for a cheapish, smallish, big-screen-ish, Android One (preferably) phone and was considering the 6.1 right up until the end. From what I could gather it's an awesome phone. I ended up buying a Mi A2 Lite, which I'm very happy with. The deciding factor was it was easy to root - the Nokia 6.1 seemed quite iffy, at best. Coming from an iPhone background you might not give a damn about rooting it. The A2 Lite doesn't have NFC either.

The battery was unexpectedly good - I'm going 3-4 days between charges which I didn't see coming.

    • The battery on my Nokia 6.1 lasts a lot longer than my previous phones.

  • I'm recommending my partners parents get the Nokia 6.1 for each other (as a Christmas present). Will there be a successor or better choice by Christmas or is this basically the go?

  • My local officeworks had the Nokia 8 on clearance for $288, that could potentially be an option too.

    • I seem to really be missing out on all the good officeworks deals lately, they haven’t had either the Nokia 8 or the 7 Plus and apparently they’ve both been at good prices. Seeing as my next nearest officeworks is over two hours away I think I’ll have to stick with the 6.1 from eBay, thanks though.
