Camry - something like this - I am sure you can negotiate on price a little

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2012-Toyota-Camry-A…

  • Just found https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/gawler-south/cars-vans-utes/…

is it just me or does this seem like a great deal hmm…

    opinion?₩

    • that seems very cheap.

in SA do you need to have a roadworthy to transfer a car to another persons name?

      • Never had to have it with any car ive bought previously. just change rego and stamp duty.

Do not buy a Cruze , even for 2k
      ..

o/t wondering why my reply didn't get into the right section where the link to the Cruze is?

    • Very risky to buy a Cruze, They're known for being nightmare and having serious problems with transmission after not many km. Buy a Camry.

      • They should have called it the Camira.

  • This is another one im looking at.

    2015 Manual Pulsar 26,700km $12,300 negotiable

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/clovelly-park/cars-vans-utes…

    • I'm not too sure about the Manual Pulsar, but I know that there's been a whole load of issues with the CVT Pulsar. They've had a whole heap of issues with that transmission. Obviously not relevant for the manual, but I'd check out the other faults too and see if any might apply to the manual. Either way, I wouldn't buy a car that has so many reported issues.

  • Either a Camry or a Mazda 3 if you can find a 2011/2012 model for under $10000 with <60,000km. Both are reasonably good on fuel.

    This seems okay

    2011 grande with 60,000km 12,999?

    • +1

Yeah that seems good. If you're not in a rush to get something quickly just keep looking around and you might save a bit

  • A few corollas that are going for under $10,000. Over 100,xxx km.

  • I bought a 2012 VE Commodore V6 dedicated LPG a year ago. I paid $14k onroad from a dealer but it had only done 75k km and was in perfect condition. There are several under $10k from private sellers.

It uses about 20% more fuel than the petrol equivalent however I'm paying 76c a litre and paid as low as 66c earlier this year. With petrol prices up around $1.45 -$1.65 I am very happy with my purchase.

I'd suggest only a hybrid like a Camry would be cheaper to run.

  • So i've gotten down to 2 definite choices.

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/craigmore/cars-vans-utes/201…

A MY14 Manual LX Lancer with 58,500 km for $8,500

Or a MY13 Auto Toyota Aurion AT-X for $10,250 with 89,724km on clock.

Or a MY13 Auto Toyota Aurion AT-X for $10,250 with 89,724km on clock.

I think the one you've linked has been in a front end accident, or has had its hood changed for some reason so be careful.

Reason why I say this is that Aurions from that year have chrome details around the body, see image 4 of the Aurion you've linked with the chrome bit between the badge and the number plate. On a 2013 Aurion the 'bulge' bit above the badge on the hood should also be chrome (see here) where as the one you've linked is white like the rest of the car.

Only Aurions from ~2015 have colour matched details (see here for example)

I have an 2013 Aurion ATX myself and noticed that straight away. The price also seems quite low as well so do your research before committing to this particular car. Other the Aurion is great and I love it!

      • Did a Gov rev check, came up with no repairable writeoffs etc. so still on the cards. Might ask em about it though.

    • +1

Yep, I have a 2016 Aurion and noticed the same thing. It's a great car though, basically a Camry with more juice and it's proper fast.

Spend more money, or you're going to stuck in a car hole of sub mediocracy.

    • -1

** sigh **. Not everybody needs a new car. The performance and features of a 2012 car won’t be far removed from current stuff, the exception being the fancy safety gadgets that you’ll need if you can’t look where you are going properly.

      • -1

That's complete bullshit. Cars in the last two years have got a lot faster. Even a POS 2018 Camry V6 will hit 100kmh in around 6 seconds, the 2012 version was just under 10 seconds. Night and day. Fuel economy is also vastly superior on modern cars.

But that's not my point. The OP currently drives two of the worst cars you can buy (they were terrible when they were new, and obviously comparatively worse now. He should spend more money to get something half decent, instead of buying another piece of crap.

If you don't know anything about cars, you shouldn't be posting in a car recommendation thread.

        • Who cares if cars two years ago were not as fast? I have a 2007 diesel ute and it is plenty fast enough to keep up with traffic or get into trouble with the law. Don’t forget for the $10-20k you save on an older car you can buy an awful lot of fuel. Cars haven’t dramatically changed in the last two years, they’ve been incrementally improving for decades.

A $10k car can provide perfectly reasonable, comfortable and reliable transport. If you are such a car snob you think everyone has to buy a new car don’t bother posting in this sort of thread.

          • -2

@Euphemistic: Ok, just ignore the drastic improvement I’ve illustrated in the post above, which is one of many examples.

You drive a piece of shit, I get it, but not everyone has to.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: The V6 Aurion from that era would get to 100km/h in under 7 secs.

        • $17,200 for a 2016 hybrid camry altise
          with 21,000km?

          • @Jugganautx: I'm not suggesting a Camry, but that's a far better car than anything you've mentioned or considered so far.

          • @Jugganautx: If your budget is $10k don’t get talked into $17k by someone who thinks you can’t buy a decent car for $10k. A 2012 Camry will have plenty of features and plenty of life left in it.

            • -2

@Euphemistic: Oh yeah, 'life left in it' is a great criteria when looking for cars.

              • @[Deactivated]: If the average age of cars in this country is still up around 10years then a six year old car will typically have more than 4 years worth of usage left in it. There are plenty of cars still providing effective transport options with over 200,000km on them. A car is a method of transport and doesn’t always have to have all the latest gadgets to do so. I see the car marketing gurus have really got their teeth into you Burnie.

Why promote spending thousands of dollars unnecessarily? This is a bargain site, not a site for showing off how much your car is worth.

                • -1

@Euphemistic: This has nothing to do with marketing. You like pieces of shit, good for you, but most people don’t.

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: That’s funny. You don’t get it. Just because you’ve been trained by the marketing peeps that only the latest in cars is good enough doesn’t mean that everyone else is of the same opinion. The average age of cars in this country says that the majority of us are happy with cars that are, in your opinion, rubbish.

Sure, the majority would probably love to have a brand new car every couple of years but they recognise that it just isn’t necessary and spend their hard earned elsewhere recognising that a car is one of the most expensive items that anyone will ever own and that also costs a significant amount just in depreciation.

                    • @Euphemistic: No I do get it, and I don’t listen to marketing. I look at cold hard figures. I buy based on metrics (financial, performance, capability, versatility). I don’t buy a car based on how long it might last. Marketing has nothing to do with it.

                      • @[Deactivated]: Ahhh. Those metric carefully crafted by the marketing dept ti make you think the product is better than another?

                        • +1

@Euphemistic: No the metrics created by the engineers that actually make one car better than another. I get it, you know nothing about cars and you are happy driving a piece of shit. Great for you, but don’t give car advice.

                          • +1

@[Deactivated]: And you should also stop giving car advice because you think that old cars are all junk. Have a look at the Aussie fleet stats. 70% of registered passenger cars are over 5yo. The average age is close to 10yo. If old cars were all junk, the stats would not look like that.

Edit: I do know cars. Have been maintaining, repairing and upgrading since I got my licence last century and have owned plenty of different types. Enough to know that thugs have improved a A LOT since the early seventies but that at any point along that fine line a 5yo car is not leaps and bounds ahead of its contemporary.

                            • @Euphemistic: No, a 5 year old car is leaps and bounds behind its contemporaries. If you knew cars, you’d know this. Efficiency and performance gains in the last 3 or 4 years have been enormous. The advent of electric cars, which outperform ICE cars by a long way has prompted this, legacy manufacturers have competition. 2.0 turbos now produce old V8 power and torque, using less than half the fuel. The latest BMW 340i for example, will hit 100kmh in 4.1 seconds. That’s faster than the previous gen M3 and almost a second faster than the car it replaces. 1 second is an eternity when looking at that metric.

                              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Get your hand off it. 0-100 times don’t mean anything for most drivers. the majority of cars are plenty fast enough for the urban environment.

Then the significant amount of cash you save buying an older car can go towards the little extra fuel you will need to run it. Don’t forget the insurance and depreciation savings as well.

And… just to be perfectly clear, I don’t disagree that newer cars are faster or more efficient. They absolutely are, but older cars are perfectly serviceable as comfortable and reliable transport on plenty of cases.

                                • -1

@Euphemistic: Your car, as an example, is not fast enough.

                                  • @[Deactivated]: As I’ve said, my car IS plenty fast enough for everyday traffic, it suits its purpose perfectly.

So what do you drive? I suspect only a keyboard.

        • No need to bring emotion into it. You like fast cars, great. You go and buy and enjoy your fast cars. OP doesn't care about fast cars, great, OP goes and buys a slow car. Why does it matter so much?

Think about how ridiculous what you're saying sounds. You were the one commenting on the BF5 thread about the Xbox copy right? So…

Spend more money, or you're going to stuck in a gaming hole of sub mediocracy. Graphics technology in the last two years have gotten a lot faster. Even a POS RX 580 will hit 60 fps in 1440p, the latest card in 2012 when the Xbox was launched could hit 30 fps. Night and day. Energy efficiency is also vastly superior on modern cards.

But that's not the point. You currently game on one of the worst platforms you can buy they were terrible when they were new, and obviously comparatively worse now. You should spend more money to get something half decent (i.e. like a PC), instead of buying another piece of crap.

You game on a POS, I get it, but not everyone has to. I guess you like POS, good for you, but most people don't. Sell your Xbox, get a PC.

You see how dumb that sounds? Not everyone is going to always buy the best of the best in everything. The same argument can be made for anything you buy. Nothing against you personally, but enjoy your cars, no need to be nasty to other people.

          • @p1 ama: I’ve got an Xbox X, I’ll be running at 4K baby.
