Best way to get to Europe return using points

Hi All,

I have about 680k Qantas and 600K Virgin points saved up.

What would be the best way to get 3 return flights to Europe in business class?

I could get access to more points with family transfers with both.

not sure which way to go? Qantas or Virgin (etihad/singapore airlines) etc.

Anyone done it before?

Transfer your Velocity points to SQ Krisflyer before the devaluation and that should definitely get you 3x 1 way tickets already. (One way is 105k SQ = 142k Velocity - if family transfer can spot you points then fly return and includes free stopover if you wish in Singapore)

Then use your Qantas points to fly Emirates or Cathay etc the other way.

I haven't redeemed to Europe but once Velocity is transferred to Krisflyer seems to have lots of availability. Have booked for the wife to Asia. Have also booked direct from Virgin Website (without transferring points) to Asia (via SQ) but had to book about 330 days in advance).

Make sure to transfer before Jan when the new transfer rates kick in.

Sell your points on the classifieds for cash and buy your tickets.

EDIT: That is for your QFF points, at least with Velocity you can pay the whole flight + taxes with them.

    • Assuming 1c per point, that is $6,800. Where can you get 3x return business class tickets to europe for that much?

      • Use the Velocity points and the extra $6-7k to go close to what he wants.

I don't think he can get 3 business return flights with 600k on either. Plus with Qantas you always have to pay charges/taxes.

    • Or sell the points, fly economy and do something with the extra ~$9k that gives you more pleasure than a bit more travelling comfort will.

Not that anyone seems to care, but selling points is against the T&Cs of these programs, and people have recently been having accounts suspended because of it (VFF in particular).

OP asked how to fly business using the points they have, not "what should I do with my points"

Even taking taxes into consideration, on a cents per point basis, this is terrible advice.

Could you get up to 840k QFF? 3x One World Award would be sweet.

  • Thanks for the heads up about virgin points, I will definitely be using those before they change the ratio, I'll see if i can transfer a few hundred from family members and aim for the SQ flights

Get to HKG any way you can in Y try for PE upgrade with points, book J award flights say HKG/CDG/SYD easier to get and low fees. Have done this 3 times now. QF award seats out of OZ are near impossible to get unless you have Gold or higher status.

We recently paid for Y to HKG got PE upgrade on Qantas using QF points, then went CX from HKG/JFK/HKG/SYD in J easy.
