PC Recommendations for Elderly Parent

Hey all my father (72 years old) needs a new PC (already has monitors and peripherals).

Cheaper the better - requirements: Windows, no gaming, he mainly watches youtube, looks at google maps etc. I told him a tablet would be better but he likes PC's for whatever reason.

Hoping for suggested specs, deals or shops to go to please - amount of choice is overwhelming.

needs a new PC (already has monitors and peripherals).

As no gaming requirements, just buy one of the used dell/hp desktops listed on here, slap a SSD in it and away they go.

    • I'll take a look - he still has an SSD (I removed it from old one, motherboard failed).

      • then even cheaper!

I'd never recommend anything less than an i3 and paired with an SSD

  • Some great cheap PC shops in Malaysia…….

Seriously, if you want advice on where to buy

… shops to go to please

providing the locales where you are prepared to shop would be of help.

    eg Perth Metro

Personally I find a laptop a lot more convenient than a convential PC and he can attach it to the peripherals as needed.

There are a lot of online places selling second hand devices. The only issue with that is they tend to have limited warranties. Otherwise look at the junk tables in places like JB, Harvey Norman, Office Works when they are getting rid of the previous level of technology. You can get some decent deals there and they usually come with a years warranty; if they go "tits up" you can go hassle them.

best of luck finding something for him.

based on the requirements of your father then I'd suggest/recommend second hand.

especially with already having the SSD.

I have a 10 year old dell with an SSD & 16gb ram as my home office PC. runs dual 22" monitors and is fine for youtube.

    Dell Optiplex

Refurbished Dell desktop on eBay e.g. previous deal Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF i5-4570 $261; these deals pop up semi regularly.

From memory, an Optiplex with i5-3470 is around the $180 mark if you want it a bit cheaper.

Throw on a Kingston A400 120GB SSD for ~$35 and you'll be set.
