pity it is SFF, else if it was full size then you could swap power supply add a graphics card.

    • +13

You can still add a gtx 1050 or gtx 1050ti to the optiplex 9020 without swapping the power supply. It's quite easy. I'm running a gtx 1050 on it now. Works great.

      • +1

It has to be a low profile one, correct?

        • -1

          Yes correct.

Keep in mind, 1050ti can only fit in the 4x PCI slot and not the 16x PCI slot. Depending on the game, it can range between 10 - 20% performance loss

        • Yes that's right. Forgot to add that. Has to be low profile and it fits in the 4x pci slot.

        • @Homr: 16x to 8x slots don't matter at all. Not sure about using a 4x. I cant imagine it would be anywhere close to 20%.

        • +1

@leftspeaker2000: Yes I know that 16x and 8x don't matter at all, thats why i said 16x and 4x. Also, the 4x slot is PCI 2.0, not 3.0

Some games had 20% loss in performance, I think BF4 was one of them when you're playing in 1440P

The majority games were about 10% loss. 10% loss is a HUGE dip when it comes to gaming, that's going from 70fps to 63FPS or 60fps to 54FPS etc

        • @Homr: Interesting. The more you know ! Yeah 10% is pretty big when gaming. I would only be using something like this as a HTPC. I would just need a video card with a h.265 decoder built in.

        • @Homr: It's better off having an HP EliteDesk 800 if intended to use dual slot PCIex16 graphics card, isn't it?

        • @O O: Correct, that's the one I'm using now.

Also the Elitedesk 800 can fit 2HDD and 1SSD without removing the optical drive.

Another advantage of the Elitedesk it provides better airflow inside as it is a little bit bigger than the Dell but not too big.

        • @Homr: True, I've just gotten a HP Prodesk 600 G1 SFF which looks pretty much the same as the elitedesk.
Really happy that it can fit 2 3.5" HDDS plus a 2.5" SSD in it!

        • @Cartman2530: Do you know the difference between the Prodesk 600 and Elitedesk 800?

        • @Homr: Pretty sure the elitedesk is a high-reliability version of the prodesk with a few extra features.

I was talking about the SFF case, its the same for both, both can fit 2 3.5" HDDs and a 2.5" HDD.

        • @Homr:

Mostly stuff around manageability. It also has a longer lifecycle (HP call it their Stable Image Platform for long term SOE deployment for corporate customers)

In short, nothing you need to worry about, the Prodesk 600s are fine.

        • @jnewau: Lifecycle? Isn't that based on Motherboards and CPU?

    • +24

Pity? I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons people buy these second-hand desktops is because of their form-factor.

      • My first “gaming” PC was an ex govt PC (like I assume these are) with a gpu added. Was totally fine for UT and the other games of the day. The base specs are not too shabby for such a purpose, but agreed a larger case/psu to enable a full gpu would be better for that use case.

Are these the same as the ones I use at work in that there’s a second sata data cable but not a second sata power cable so you can’t plug in a second drive?

      • SFF is great in offices and if people just want a PC and screen perhaps at home , but expansion is very limited due to the physical, size and wattage of the power supply, and card expansion due to space above the slots ….. we still have a machine at home 2nd gen i5 and after adding an rx480 graphics card is used for gaming.

just depends what people want to do, but the current cost of RAM makes used machines attractive if they can be expanded.

      • Yup 100% that, it's a very small, quiet, simple and reliable machine which is quite fast.

        • How quiet are they?
I was thinking of turning it into a home theatre PC, with a fanless low profile GTX 1030 for the x265 decoding.

        • +1

@RedHab: Fairly good to be honest, it's not dead silent but it's pretty quiet.

When you initially turn it on a little fan test happens for 2 seconds but after that, very quiet.

        • @hamwhisperer: Thanks for the info!

  • Could this do 4K for an htpc?

    • +1

Chuck a low profile Nvidia -50 card like a 750ti or 1050 and absolutely.

    • +1

Could this do 4K for an htpc?

the i5 yes 24Hz movies, but not 60Hz or hdmi2.0 if you need that.
These days, better to get a small ARM box - Kodi, android-TV, Apple-Tv, etc.

  • +2

    1092 sold at 9am.. lol
thats a crazy number, where do they keep them all

also. lots of negative feedback. when you read it you probably wont buy from them

    • 100 have sold since early June.

But it is interesting to know where they keep sourcing them from.

Not that I'm complaining. Great little unit.

      • +13

Our company handles the disposal work of the pretty much all government departments, big banks, Big companies, universities, school systems ect.

It's thousands of units a month. We cherry pick the good stocks for general public retail and export the vast majority of it.

        • -5

and export the vast majority of it.

          To Russian hackers?

        • +32

          @jv: Nigerian princes…….

        • +2

          @jv:

Working units end up in North Korea schools in third world countries mostly. Others are pulled apart and treated to extract precious metals, this is done by people that are not wearing any shoes because they cannot afford them.

        • Is there a reason why there is so much of the DELL SFF and not much of the HP G1 SFF?

        • just curious, what are the current batch system are they replacing it with??

      • +1

Office refeshes ….we replaced 700 workstation where I used to work over 3 mths, base units, monitors keyboard and mice ….
With things like the 5th gen cpus which we had, we upgraded from Win 7 SOE to Win10, so it was done with new hardware, someone worked out it was better idea than opening up the machines, adding more RAM, telling people to go to lunch, reimage, etc.

If people are costing you $60-$100 per hour you minimise disruption and risk and keep people working.

        • Also leasing/ service contracts are typically 3 years.

  • Can you add more HDD? does it have space for 2 hdds?

    • +1

Pretty sure you can only fit 1.

    • +1

You can fit 1 SSD and 1HDD. If you want to take up the optical drive, you can fit 2SSD and 1HDD

    • If you can't there is always the option of external hard drive, cheap and pretty fast these days especially on USB 3 or even better on USB C.

    • +1

I got a 9010 about a month ago, it had space and a power supply for a 2nd 2.5 inch HDD/SSD. you can also add a 3rd in the optical drive using a caddy.

      • +1

        Thanks. nice name btw

  • What brand/model is the SSD in the opti 9020?

  • How are the RAM configured in these machines? 4x2GB, 2x4GB or 1x8GB?

    • +3

      I remember seeing 2 x 4gb when i looked inside.

    • +1

2x4gb on the identical spec ones we have at work

  • +2

these desktops with the i7 are pretty good on their own. add a 1050 ti and it's a decent budget rig.

    • the i7 ones cost alot more.

Luckily for me, I scored an i7 9020 for $231 a few months ago :D

  • Is this DDR4?

  • -4

Bought from them once and never again.

Within 1 year of purchase, I contacted their team and indicated my computer didn’t turn on and amber lights flashing.

They simply replied with sending me a user manual…

Besides who knows how long these computers have been running and how hard of a life they’ve had.

The computers only come with 3 months warranty.

    • +10

I'd be happy to look into this for you, generally we look after everyone regardless. If the lights were flashing it's giving you the error code, so it makes sense that you would have been sent the user manual to decode the issue.

Send us a message and i'm more than happy to look into it for you.

    • +12

Isn't that the reason they are so cheap? Not sure what you can expect from an old ex-govt/enterprise computer.

    • +5

As you said. It came with 3mths warranty and the pc failed within 1year, which mean its out of the warranty period. You are lucky they even tried to help you by sending you a user manual to self diagnose, because if you bought a pc from Dell direct and contacted Dell for after support they will just direct you to their sales dept.

    • +1

It's a used PC. What would you expect the disposer to do?

The CPU in this ad dates back to ~2013, so they're obviously rather old. And quite a few government computers run around the clock. Motherboards don't last forever!

    • It's second hand. If you want new go buy new. It was obviously in good shape when they sold it to last a year, what have YOU been doing with it since?

  • +5

I thought PHENOM was AMD. This is an i5

  • Has anyone tried running fortnite on one of these?

    • +1

I don't play fornite but the recommended spec is a 660 or higher.
So if you chuck in a low profile 1050 it should be fine. But that's still another $170 new, you might be better off trying to buy a second hand tower off OCAU or Facebook.

    • Yep - have a 9010 with quadcore i5 3rd gen, 8gb and a 1050ti low profile.

No issues running 1080p on Epic settings.

  • Would the 9020 be any good for playing counter-strike on? I dont think it uses much…. well back in the day it didnt

    • +2

if you add in the 1050ti, it will be fine

Not many games can utilize full CPU usage of the i5 4570, some games don't even utilise i5 2500

  • @Calmago

re the 9020…. Can they come with Windows 7 instead? Can they be upgraded to 16gb RAM? Can i plug in 2 screens?

    • They come with 2x4gb ram, so 16gb ram is possible

yes you can use 2 screens if you add a video card that support multiple screen display or get a USB to VGA adapter

      • Video Output: VGA + 2 x Display Port

Wait, am i completely out of the loop or is this not capable of supporting two monitors?

        • +1

ahh yes, the display port can support another monitor..or 2

    • Yes, you can request win 7 rather than win 10.

  • I'm assuming it would be fine, but asking anyway, would this handle modern web development stuff (React, node servers, lots of tabs and programs open at once)

  • Can I take out this motherboard and place it in a normal CPU casing? Reason being I have a spare GTX 960 which I do not want to waste.

  • How much RAM can I fit max into these 9020 machines?

    • 4 ram slots. comes with 2x4gb. i think max is 32gb.

    • Has 4 slots, so 32 GB.

  • Fantastic machine. Mine runs like a dream. SSD makes a huge difference in these. Has room for two hdd, just need to buy some cheap power and data splitters from memory. I purchased mine with 500 gb sata 7200 rpm amd added ssd as primary.

  • Once you've added 16GB of RAM and a 1050 ti how far off are you from buying just a second hand gaming rig or one that someone has already upgraded?

    i.e. here is one for $650 - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gaming-PC-Dell-Optiplex-9010-SFF…

    • That's only $585 after the 10% off, pretty good!

But this deal is $261 + $170 for the 1050 used in the deal you linked:
      Only $431

Your ebay deal has a slightly larger SSD and another 8GB of RAM (although one gen older CPU), not really worth the $150 more you're paying but not terrible for prebuilt.

    • +1

      important to note that's a 1050, not a 1050ti..

      • Ahhh… thanks, noted

  • +1

I've added another 60 units that the dispatch team have found off another pallet.

  • I bought this from the last deal. I bought a usb wifi dongle. Even though it’s showing as connected to wifi, for whatever reason, internet randomly doesn’t work. This is a constant issue and I have no clue what’s the issue or how to resolve it.

All drivers and software are updated.

    • check power saving and sleep mode, sometimes when it goes into power save it shuts down the USB port, when it powers back up, it might not sense the dongle coming up or check for it. Buy a cheap wireless card like TP-link and use that if you want quick fix rather than fault finding.

  • +1

Got one for a pal of mine and a 1050ti low profile from Computer Alliance's 20% off deal. $484.20 all up. good stuff

    • Think you could play PUBG with this?

      • Yeah you can play pubg with this at 1080p 60fps with some fiddling around of the settings.
Use this example of a laptop with a 7700hq processor and same graphics card, there's not much difference specs-wise between the two.
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgbr0NpaTww
It'd be a good idea to add extra ram. i saw some extra identical ram modules for $23 each on ebay. so 2 of those and you have 16gb ram.

    • how much did u get the 1050ti for?

    • Hi Balmaino, sorry just a quick question, I'm looking at doing this too, I have watched a few youtube clips on installing 1050ti which looks fairly simple. However when the computer reboots after putting the graphics card do you know if it will auto install all the required drivers and start working or will I have to manually install the drivers etc for the new graphics card to start working?

Sorry I'm a computer spastic and my kids have been bugging me for a computer to play fortnite on and I think this is going to be my best option, thanks mate

      • +1

You'll have to pop the graphics card in, then head to the nvidia website and download drivers, nvidia have a package that makes it pretty easy:
        https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/109860
after install you may need to reboot, then change the monitor connection from the computer's monitor ports to the graphic card's monitor ports and that's it

        • +1

I would download the drivers BEFORE installing the graphics card.

        • +1

Thanks so much Balmaino for taking the time to reply, cheers Andrew

  • Sight im at work and can't use ebay but i hope there's some of the cheaper ones left when i get home this evening cos if there is i'll get one for sure

    • +1

Purchase through your phone with Mobile Data?

  • Anyone know what the fastest AMD GPU that this can take without fiddling around with new PSUs etc? 1050 is great, but was thinking about a hackintosh build with AMD GPU for FCP.

  • hi, could this be used for Unifi nvr, NAS and plex server at the same time.
