Penfolds Bin 389 for $38.80/Bottle at Dan Murphy's

300

Just picked up 12 bottles of Penfolds Bin 389 2008 from Dan Murphy's. 1st Choice Liquor were selling at $37/bottle, under the wholesale price of $45/bottle, but apparently that offer expired yesterday.

Went in to DM's this afternoon and asked them to pricematch, they offered to sell it to me at $38.80/bottle and I grabbed a dozen, since it's usually $65/bottle.

This wine is known as 'Baby Grange' or 'Poor-man's Grange' as it is actually put into the barrels used for the previous year of Grange - so 2008 stuff used the same barrels from the 2007 Grange.

I've attached my receipt, good luck to you all.

Edit: it's a 2008 Bin 389, not a 2009.

This is good if Foster employees haven't bought them all.

Sorry mate… you got a fake. I would promptly return it since the 2009 won't be out for another year ;)

    • +2

Actually you might be right. The guy said 2009, I didn't look at the box. It's probably a 2008 (given that 2008 was only just released). Good point!

    oops, maybe not.

"Are there any retailers who are not participating?
Vintage Cellars, Dan Murphys, First Choice, BWS, Liquorland and Woolworths Liquor are not participating in the promotion."

btw, thank you for sharing. I might go and pick up a bottle.

  • i've got a couple of 707's from about 10 years ago, i wonder how much they'd be worth ?

    • The average is apparently $232 a bottle.

      • How much did a 707 cost in 2001?

I've got some St Henri 1998 bottles that were purchased for around $50 per bottle in 2001 which are worth maybe $120 to $130 today. After taking inflation into account they've almost doubled in value.

        • That's like what 7.56%pa interest
Not too bad an investment ;)

        • we split a dozen with some friends, we paid around $70 each i think…

maybe i'll just drink them instead…

        • Bought some 1998 707 when it was released for $115 a bottle. Still got 1 left. It would have been released 2004 and there was a premium on that vintage same as there was for Grange, so I suspect if purchased in 2001 maybe around $80?

Bought a bottle of St Henri yesterday for a client gift from First Choice, $119.99 so depending on your vintage a current value of $120-$130 may be conservative.

      • Assuming they were bought 15 years ago that's 8.31%pa interest
        Bought 10 years ago and that's 12.72%pa

Damn wine looks like a fine investment indeed. If you can't sell it, I guess you just got yourself an excuse to drink some wine lol

        • It's a fine investment, as long as it doesn't spoil. Penfolds runs wine clinics for bottles over 10 years of age and some people are bitterly disappointed when their $100+ wine is declared as only being fit for cooking.

        • It's less once you consider the fees taken by auction houses. :-)

If anyone has recommendations for good places to consign or sell fine wines, I'd be happy to listen. Thanks!

Clinics are great but your Grange loses value once it has been checked and topped up by the clinic. But you do get to taste some. :-)

Such bottles are great value for those buying to actually, gasp, drink it!

        • @shawn_low I thought it was quite the opposite, Penfolds wines would gain value after they've been checked, it would prove they are not stuffed.

@Cluster Penfolds Clinic only check wines that are 15 years or older. I went to one last year. I have a 96 Bin 389 (a fine vintage that one) but I couldn't bring it. To my consolation the 77 Grange I had was in great shape although it needed to drank rather quickly to which I happily obliged. :)

  • I always found the Bin 389 to be an amusing wine from the 'it's touched the same barrels that Grange has been in' marketing angle.

So many wine enthusiasts in here :D

Great to see that all types of bargains are appreciated

  • Great find.

  • Normal price is $44.90 or $42.70 as part of any six:
    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_73309/penfolds-bin-389-c…

  • This is a great price. A couple of years ago I got it on average for $34 a bottle but that was 30 half cases.

Not sure what the current vintage is like, I bought a bottle just yesterday for my sisters birthday from First Choice $37-38 from memory, so I'm sure she will tell me soon.

For those into champagne Kemenys has Bollinger Special Cuvee @ $59.99, got this pricematched at First Choice (yeah my sister really took advantage of big brother being in town…)

    • Looks like $59.99 at Dan Murphys currently too.

      • yes but in a 1/2 doz buy, otherwise its $64.95

  • Great wine great price

  • +2

The question is does it taste good?

    • +1

The answer is yes, it does

      • but you probably need to lay it down for another 10 years. can you wait that long? :)

    • You drink it!?

    • Probably in 10 years time. Anyone drinking 389 at such a young age will only taste "wood" aka Oak. These wines are meant for the long run. I'd say drink ~2020 - 2025. The only 389 that I am willing to quaff now is 1996 & 1998.

      • Would you even want to drink it then? I'd be MUCH more tempted to sell it.

        • +1

Well, ultimately wine was made to be drunk.

A local Dan Murphy's had a 1996 Grange available for tasting. I lined up an hour early and met a couple in line who had some mid 90s Grange bottles in a climate controlled fridge. I asked them if Grange is as good as people make it out to be, to which they answered "We don't know. We've never had an opportunity to try Grange before". They own the bottles yet have never tried it.

I wonder how many people buy Grange every year to cellar it and never try a drop?

        • My dad collects wine and he's never opened any of his Granges. I asked him if he would, and he said he'd sell it for $500 and buy 10x $50 bottles of wine instead.

      • Somebody's rich

      • I second that!

  • Tried at QV Dan murphys, no luck. Normal price is $44 a bottle there.

  • Think of buying wine as an investment, where can I sell it in 10-20 years?

    • Prob invest your money elsewhere, high interest rate bank account. But if you want to invest in this, you can sell it on ebay in the future or at auctions. But IMO, if I was to buy this bottle later on, I'd rather pay for it at DM as I know it has been cellared properly.

  • This was the price I got from Dan Murphys on 09/03.

    2008 Bin 389 - $36.85/bottle
    2008 Bin 407 - $32.85/bottle

I think it should be the first week promotion for new Bin release. I'm not sure it could be used for price match or not.

  • +1

$38 still sounds like a lot for sloppy seconds of Grange.

  • Just bought 6 today!
