Do you turn your data on and off on your mobile.

I always have my data switched off on my phone and only turn it on when I need to use it to surf, Facebook, email or anything else that might need it for. I always that by doing this it achieved a few things such as saving data & saving power. I was wondering what others do out there and if it really does save much data by having it on all the time. I typically have my apps that use data switched to wifi only (like Spotify) and any apps I don't want to receive push through notifications switched off. I typically use only about half of my data per month (2gb out of 4gb) but sometimes a lot more depending where I am and what i need to use it for.

I never manually turn off my data connection.

While most of my apps only use data when Im using the app, it defeats the purpose of all the non-SMS chat apps like Whatsapp etc. that requires a constant connection.

Depending on how frequently you turn data on and off, I think it could possibly chew up relatively more battery power if you do it too often (vs just leaving it on).

    • Could be right in terms of power usage turn on and off, for me that is several times a day. I don't really use or don't fuss too much for the apps that can use constant connection. Happy to receive them at different times of the day when I do connect or on wifi when I am home.

I guess if your goal is to minimize data usage, you could probably do it the other way around - Instead of turning off the data, you could try restricting data for individual apps that use lots of data such as Facebook or Instagram etc.

yep, do that now, I guess I am just being over cautious. I do tend to let myself go towards the end of the month when I am not even 50% of my limit yet.

          • @colaman: Some phones (I've got it on my android, but not sure about iphone) have a function that restricts data usage once it hits a certain point. You can set the start date to match your billing period and the amount of data to restrict it. It's not going to be 100% accurate, so I've set mine to restrict at 75% - when that happens I go check my online account before unrestricting it for the rest of that month.

Maybe if you turned it on and off every minute for 8 hours or whatever but for most users not having mobile network radios operating saves a large amount of battery power.

I used to when I had a small data allowance but now I don't care

Only matters if you're hitting your data limit every month, or if your phone's battery isn't lasting the full day. Neither is an issue for me, so no.

Never, only do it when I am travelling overseas :)

  • I'm trying to use as much mobile data as I can but can't seem to every reach the limit, because Kogan just keeps giving me more!!! <3 I also have a pocket wifi because its $1 for 30gb…. I stream youtube, netflix etc on max quality

    • $1 for 30GB is absolutely amazing! How did you manage that?

Also what pocket wifi do you use?

      • I used this deal:
        vodafone pocketwifi
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167640

so I basically get 80GB a month since kogan just increased limit from 32 to 40GB woooooow

        • That data allowance is just insane. But $1 for 30GB isn't ongoing is it?

          p.s haven't heard of MX for years…

          • @Member 0230: The plan last 30 days after activation & must activate before a certain date (generally within 2 months of purchase). I buy 2 and activate them monthly before the deadline date.

have 32gigs and only manage to use 1

I have 2GB a month now and never have to worry about running out of data. Also I don't understand how people have issues with phone batteries.

    • I don't really have an issue with power but I do try to push my phone from 2 to 3 days without charging (I have an extra high capacity battery 8500mah).

  • I used to, but I upgraded to 6 GB and don't have to now. Eventhough I do turn it off when I want to save battery or get away from people.

The only time I switch my mobile data off is when WiFi is broke. Android knows it's broken so uses the mobile network, which is annoying when you're trying to access your modem.

  • I have 200GIG a month, I want apps to consume more of my mobile data, lucky to use 40

    • How does you use 40gb? Tethering/hotspot and streaming lots of videos?

      • yeah Stan chews a bit, and i watch my you tube videos in the highest quality where I can. Also cause of the amount of data on my plan, i just do all my app updates etc over 4G. Very rarely hotspot, maybe my ps4 when at a mate that does not have internet. Yep 2018 and no internet haha.

  • Got 60GB on Telstra and only use 15. Don't even turn on wifi unless I need to use my Sonos.

  • Not when I have 100gigs

  • Not at all but I do toggle Data Saver on occasionally and have set Chrome to use less data anyway.

  • Wifi at home. Wifi at work. Never get close to using my mobile data even on holiday
