These will not work properly with a halogen reflector. By that I mean that light will reflect where it isn't supposed to and be hellish for oncoming traffic. There's a reason they're not ADR approved.

    Convert your Globes to LED

    Retro-fitting these is illegal.

    • These ones are illegal due to their brightness. The 'normal' ultinon apparently may not be illegal. But in all cases, they can apparently only be used in reflector headlights, not projector headlights that most cars nowadays have.

I have been wanting to buy the lower-brightness ultinons are they appear to be within ADR spec, but the "projector" bit is an issue for me. Phillips does not recommend their use in projector headlights.

I tried getting more info from Phillips about the legality here, but it looks like these are just rebadged white-label products. Phillips said "can't help you" and referred me to "Signify", who said "wrong company, you need Lumileds", who never got back to me. So with this kind of backing by Phillips, I would not have much confidence in any aspect of this product or its legality.

  • OP Will tbis fit a 2016 Honda HRV? This is interesting.

    • Yes, HRV are H4 or 9003. Fogs are H8.
Phillips (these) or OSRAM are the brands to go.

    • In case it is not obvious enough - these are illegal for public road use.

yep that "Not ADR Approved" says it all. In saying that, i do have LEDs on my fogs, also not ADR approved but since they point down so much i figured it'll be fine.

  • Would highly recommend Osram - 'Night Breakers' as a replacement for standard halogen bulbs. picked up a pair for $35 delivered on amazon and are road legal..

  • Reflector design for globes is a science.

Putting LED globes in place of your halogens is highly likely going to prove to be a poor lighting choice simply because the light output pattern from the globe will be different. Your headlights may be bright but the dispersion pattern may be awful.

Osram Xenarc Night Breaker Unlimited halogen is my choice. By on ebay from electronix gmbh and get them from Germany at a great price and usually fairly quickly.

    • Problem is that the whiter halogens have a short lifespan. My experience with the Phillips one is I have to change them after about 8000 km / 10 months. Tried Narva Intense, got about a year and a half out of it. Currently on Osram Cool Blue intense which I got cheaply from Powerbulbs (~27AUD), and they seem alright.

      • Really? that's very strange. I'm using Narva plus 100 on my Supra for way over 20,000kms and it's been fine.

        • Narva Plus is not whiter (i.e. less yellow), it is brighter. Whiter bulbs (higher temperature, i.e. "Kelvin") run hotter and thus last shorter. Often barely over 100h. Phillips Whitevision rates theirs are still above 400h, but having had multiple pairs I can say this is BS.

    • Can U post a link of seller, unable to find on eBay search, trying to find some good hb3's at a decent price.

  • So you can install them in your car but then you cant drive your car on the road?

    • You can drive with them fitted but when Mr Plod pulls you over because he thinks your headlight beams look strange, you might find yourself walking home and having to get your vehicle tested.

In theory, but you would have to think next to impossible, you could have an accident at night and your insurer on seeing that LED globes have been fitted could try to run an argument that you have voided your cover by fitment of illegal globes that resulted in impaired night vision that caused the accident.
