Audi Q7 - Should I Buy?

Hi guys, I’m in the market for a 7 seater. Audi was never on my list, but I've been offered a great deal on Audi Q7 demo 80k. It’s over my budget, but with 25k trade I can make it work (barely, will survive on instant noodles for rest of my life:)

I read that there is unresolved adblue issue in Q7 and they are trying to clear all demos and new ones have been taken off sale. Does anyone know anything this issue and how serious is it?

Any advice if it’s a wise or a dumb thought to buy, considering there is an unresolved issue.

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks guys

Probably just as good as buying a repaired written off mini.

    mitsubishi outlander 7 seater @ $30k new

can eat smash avo everyday for breakfast lunch dinner

Why would you buy an $80k car which it sounds like you will struggle to afford? You can get a good SUV for half that price. If your existing car is trading in for $25k you can probably sell it privately for over $30k. Not sure if you are making the best financial decisions for you. Use your inner ozbargain spirit!

Nobody has asked the important question. Maybe it is the best financial decision…

      Where do you work OP?

      • +3

@toristo… do you sense a new high yield investment vehicle?

        • Couldn't say… I don't have the requisite knowledge to make such a call. If only there were someone on the forums who could help…

    • +1

Agree. Sounds like a terrible idea to stretch our finances so thin on a depreciating asset.

  • +3

Why do you want to buy an Audi Q7? You're spending 80k for something that does exactly the same thing as something that costs 40k.

  • +1

    no way! too expensive.

  • +14

You should buy it. Regret should never come cheap.

Expensive cars are not worth it unless you are truly wealthy. The maintenance and repair costs on an Audi are not fun.

  • Hello its OZBargains official Audi enthusiast/ fanboy here.

They are great cars, especially the 4M series Q7s, the tech is amazing and the 3.0TDI is a great and reliable engine. The virtual cockpit is awesome too. Certainly one of the leaders of its class too, up with the new XC90 (check that out too if you haven't already. Be sure to keep up with maintenance and you should be fine. We own an a3, A4 (with a 3.0TDI) and A5, let me know if you need any more help.

    • Hey Nicholas, how many km's are on your 3.0 TDI right now? Any DSG issues? :)

    • Currently at 78000 and so real issues. Just a check engine light that needs to be taken a look . It’s one of Audi’s most reliable engines for sure

      • Good to hear, I've got one too but lowkey scared it'll crap itself one day but the VAG mechanics said the same thing as you haha.

  • Buy Lexus please. Bought RX brand new last year

    • A few years ago I debated whether to buy the Q5 or RX350, Lexus won in terms of price and feel. Fast forward three years later, it was on fire while sitting in the garage when I was out and my whole garage was destroyed.

Worth noting that this happened overseas

  • Was looking for 7-seater recently. Looked at demo Discovery Sport, brand-new Kodiaq, demo 5008 initially. Started thinking about second-hand Q7 at this point in time, but later decided against it due to the value and ongoing maintenance cost.

Finally settled for a demo Tiguan Allspace last month. Love the tech. Negotiate hard and you could have a full option demo for 45-48k.

  • Don't get the audi. In another 6 months you might be regretting the decision. On top of servicing fees are high as well.

Nothing wrong with the q7, but why the hell would you stretch yourself so far? I assume you will be financing, so paying for a depreciating "asset" with a loan that you also have to pay a percentage fee on. Seems like a terrible decision if you would figuratively be "eating instant noodles for the rest of your life".

  • No brain no gain :)

  • If you can afford it (which sounds like you are just) then go for it - but bear in mind you need to factor in the servicing / maintenance cost - and given that you need 7 seats, it sounds like you are going to be "driving people" around thus driving more = higher costs.

That said, the Q7s are a fantastic car. They are BIG outside, generous space inside, the engine is an absolute delight - it is super smooth, super quiet, very powerful, with some smart features like disconnecting the transmission when you are 'coasting' to save fuel. It gets excellent fuel economy for the size of car it is.

The third row seats are pretty crap for adults however unless they are shorter than 160cm, maybe 155cm to be safe LOL

Entry levels forgo the Virtual Cockpit which is amazing, you may not get ambient lighting which I think are fantastic and playful.

    YOLO

It does not "disconnect the transmission to save fuel". This would use more fuel.

      • Try it on the motorway next time, hit 100km/h and lift off the throttle - the transmission "disconnects" and your revs drop to idle rpm.

        • Also known as actual coasting, and available as a 'feature' on any car that's a manual…

        • The transmission does not disconnect. Coasting in gear uses less fuel as NO fuel is being injected compared to a small amount at actual idle.

Buy Kluger is the best IMO. Cheap to maintain.

  • +2

I am a firm believer that if you cannot afford a car outright, you should not buy it. Finance should be a question of convenience and opportunity cost rather than ability to pay off

  • +1

Don't get it, it will depreciate a lot if you every need to sell it, just buy a Landcruiser

    • Landcruiser costs more.

But I'd also get a LC.

  • +1

Great car but sounds like you haven't factored in the entire cost of ownership (based on the little info provided) so I wouldn't recommend to you at this stage

  • It’s over my budget

Then no. A luxury SUV is a luxury. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

  • +1

You’re asking the wrong community. Everyone here will suggest a boring kluger instead.

The issue I would have is that they’ve stopped selling new ones and are trying to sell you a demo. Might be the deal of the century however I would be insisting they put something in writing in the contract that basically says they will cover any adblue issue. Also contact Audi directly and check they are allowed to sell demos still.

I would also try and wrangle an extended warranty out of them. Otherwise the (imo) better BMW X5 arrives this month and the GLE next year. That’s where their buyers are going and they’ll been keen for the sale.

Really though you need to consider whether you can afford it and are buying it just for the badge. They are great cars but Audi has a bad reputation for quality control.

  • (barely, will survive on instant noodles for rest of my life:

NO (because I can't tell if you're serious or not)
You shouldn't buy a depreciating asset where the cost is going to impact/affect your current lifestyle.

Ok, so you can barely afford it… what happens when you need to get your insurance? when you need to pay for expensive services? when you need something replaced? doesn't look like you have considered the hidden cost of ownership.

  • AdBlue. Enough said.

  • Toyota Alphard

  • I feel like these posts are jokes. Every single time someone puts something like this up there is an avalanche of responses (entirely appropriate responses) yelling buy a Toyota (or similar). The community here is plainly very adverse to any kind of European brand motor vehicles, so either these posts are a joke or the people asking these questions are completely tone deaf.

    • In this case they are averse to op extending themselves way to far to buy a badge. Nothing wrong with an Audi or a q7, or most euro cars. Some are shit, like VW 118tsi, or 4 cylinder BMW's, but lots are good.

  • I mean hey, if you want to work for your whole life to pay off a CAR… go for it.

There's a middle ground between buying a 3k bomb and working your butt off for ten years to retire, and FINANCING a brand new luxury car for 80k. That would be buying a late demo/used car for 30-40k and saving yourself a bunch of work.

Honestly that is such a stupid decision, stretching your budget for a luxury car that will probably have issues.
