New Mobile Needed

My Galaxy s5 is really showing its age now and I want to update.

I'm looking for something with a little more internal storage (32 or 64gb), something that can use 5ghz wifi and doesn't slow down when a few apps are open at once. One big thing is I want a decent camera (no worse than my current camera).

I recently bought a Huawei Nova 3e for my missus, seems like a nice phone but she doesn't do much with it, it is fine for her.

I'm seeing Galaxy s8 for good price at Mobileciti $653 on their ebay store atm. I'm wondering if there will be even better deals over the next week (Black Friday etc…)

I can't see any benefit to a dual sim phone though, I only have one sim card :/

Advice most welcome..

Cheers

  • What's wrong with expandable storage?

    • I have 64gb SD card but my phone keeps telling me the memory is full. I assume it refers to internal memory. So I moved all my pics etc.. to sc card but no difference :(

      • You need to understand the difference between portable sd memory and adoptable memory.

  • OnePlus

  • There are no 5G capable phones in the market yet. Unless you are wiling to wait till mid to late 2019 I would strike off 5G as a requirement.

      5g wifi

maybe OP is referring to 5GHz Wi-Fi (802.11ac). Cheers

      • I think the mi mix 3 is supposed to be 5g but that isn't available until q1

  • Do you have a budget?
I don't think there are that many phones that use 5g. 4g is good enough for the ten years probably.

Personally I just got the mi max 3 but one of the android one Nokias should work well for you.

  • Sorry, yes, I mean 5Ghz Wifi :) my bad…

My current SG5 is constantly telling me that it is full. It's 16GB internal memory is maxed out constantly. I have a 64gb SD card that I store pics and stuff on, also xfered apps that can be moved to SD card, but still the internal memory is full :( and my battery on full charge goes flat after just 5-6 hours of sitting on the table. I bought a replacement battery last week but it does the same thing. I had an issue with the cover of the usb port that it got bent, so I cut it off completely.

It's also really frustrating to charge it, the usb plug doesnt seem to make proper contact and the phone keeps telling me to check the cable and it beeps at me and usually doesnt charge without me messing with the connection. Ive tried different cords but same problem.

I'm wondering if I should stay with Samsung, i've had Samsung since my SG2 many years ago. I am using alot of Google stuff nowadays (Google Home mini, Google cloud storage, Gmail etc…) so if I go to another brand I am worried my Google stuff might not be compatible?

    Anyway, my budget is $500-600

    thanks

    • Do you want a phone with warranty or any?

      • Not too worried about warranty, because I can buy it using my Coles MC with consumer protection plan. So if it breaks, or stolen, or even if it comes down in price, I can claim for it.

        • Does that work for overseas purchase? If so, OnePlus 6 is around 550.

  • I read this about the OnePlus 6:

There is also one other area where not being sold in Australia might hurt. If you’re in a strong 4G area and your 3G reception is a bit hit and miss, OnePlus 6 doesn’t seem to work on VoLTE in Australia; 4G data works just fine, but on Vodafone and Optus (which I tried) there’s no VoLTE. This means your calls drop back to 3G and may not perform as well as you’d like.

I do use Vodaphone. So now I think the reception might fail me with this phone?

    • grab a nokia 7 plus from officeworks for ~$395 by price beating grey imports.
      it's a decent phone.

  • OK, so do you think this is a good price atm, $653 after discount:

  • Price beating grey imports ?

  • Do I just go in there and tell them to price beat ?

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/huawei-nov…

price beat at officeworks for ~$331.132
      3i better than 3e

      • So how do I convince the sales kid at Officeworks to lower the price to beat Gearbest ?

        • Call up head office first. See what they say.
If they refuse, call your nearest stores.
          Their policy allows grey imports.
They're both dual Sim so I can't see any differences.

          • @follow: So I called OW and the stupid lady couldn't even find the phone on the Gearbest website….I had to guide her through the process of doing a Google search and then a product search :/ even then she said it's not coming up on her screen? WTF?

So after about 20 minutes she went and got some help and was told that GearBest is NOT in Australia so they wont price beat …. OMFG

            So no luck :(

@pookie: Their policy doesn't require Australian site. I've price beaten eglobalcentralau. Not Australian site.
              Try calling your local store.

              • +1

@follow: :) So I called the store and the guy had to go and check about price beat…he eventually said ok :)

So I went just now and grabbed it for $331 with 2yr Australian warranty etc… $170 less than the store price :)

                Cheers for the help :)

                PJ

                • @pookie: Hi. Any chance you could take a photo of the receipt please as my local officeworks won't price beat gearbest

                  • @bigben75: Sure. But I don't know how to upload picture to you?

Can you go in there another day, or Thursday night or Saturday morning casual staff etc? I think it depends who you speak to.

At first my guy said they won't because it's not an Australian website, but I acted dumb and said "oh, but it shows the price in Australian dollars.", he then seemed unsure and said ok then no problem :)

  • I haven't had a Nokia since my 3310 :)

  • You do know that Pookie is American slang right?
