      Im vegetarian :)

    • It's pretty good. Buy two duz and stick the $400 leftover on Winx next time she runs.

Is this classed as an investment?

Guaranteed to lose money when you sell.

      • You'd be surprised. I don't know who, but people will bid up particularly good Grange vintages decades after their release.

      In the ballpark

You'd expect to see a return on your investment if you were to sell a few bottles in 5-10 years provided have the ability to store the wine correctly. I'd also do some reading about the 2012/13 vintages to determine if this is a good buy to maximise your ROI

    • Not anymore …1990 saw grange triple in price in one year, since then there has been no big jump and you pay commission when you sell

It needs a reputeable global magazine eg decanter to award it "best wine in the world for vintage " as happened with 1976 and 1990 vintage …

      What's the normal price?

Previous bottles have cost a Premier their job. - Grange-gate costs Premier his job

Also devalued chances of wannabe Premier - Lobster With a Mobster

It can be used as an investment, but you hold all the risk. There could be cork taint, reducing its value to near zero instantly with no warranty possible.

Grange also doesn't appreciate in price all that much.
      https://www.nicks.com.au/2009-penfolds-grange?gclid=Cj0KCQiA…

Three year older vintage for just $30 more. Conservatively you need to make a 5% return after tax every year on Grange for the investment to keep up with other investment options. $720 at 5%pa is $36. Assuming that 2009 cost $720 3 years ago, it should really be selling for at least $828 otherwise the investor is losing money. The problem is Grange production is not really that limited (tens of thousands of bottles made per year) and there are a lot of people collecting it, each thinking they'll sell it for a hefty price premium in the future.

      • There could be cork taint

        They still use cork ???

        • +1

Yes. Grange and I believe other top wines like 707 are under cork and probably will always be. Some people still believe cork to be the superior closure. I strongly disagree, having had many bottles of wine ruined by that all too familiar mousey cork taint smell.

          • @Cluster: I still have a couple of 707's from about 15 years ago… Probably vinegar now.

@jv: They are probably still very good. You can take them to Penfold's free wine clinic to get tested and recertified.

I'm afraid they might tell me I need to put them down…

They seem to think only very old wines need testing. 2-3 years ago, I rang them first, and even though my wines were like 19 years old, the advice was if the volume was still full at the neck, weighing pros and cons, better to wait a while longer before testing. Could not remember the exact reason, but supposed to be advantageous to wait. (Or perhaps they just wanted less work :-) )

  • yes a long term one however and its a 100 point wine so will appreciate.

    • I doubt it.

100 points will not make me 100% satisfied, especially knowing the price.
We've had a 76' vintage which was rated 100. It was also a clinic'ed bottle and we knew the provenance. We felt the Grange probably worth about $100 with $200 being the max for it's quality.

    • +1

Same for my 1990 ….drank some and sold the rest

  • When speculators started buying grange as investments you knew the market was dead,

  • +3

I think I'd rather 48 bottles of $15 wine instead of 1 bottle of $720 wine thanks.

After a point they don't get much better, but they get much more expensive.

About 10 years ago my local Dan Murphy's held a free Grange tasting session. Being a wine lover, I made sure to line up very early to get my glass. It was double decanted and one of the good years, and while it was very good I think it no way justifies the sky high price.

A couple standing behind me in line said they own bottles of Grange but had come to Dan Murphy's to try it for the first time. You know the market is getting silly when people buy a product and then refuse to use it.

Grange is a classic example of a Veblen good.

      • I think it no way justifies the sky high price.

I agree, unless tasting for free :-). Many years ago, Vintage Cellars used to be very generous - held free tastings with 3 Grange vintages, RWT, Yattarna and the other Penfold high-value wines in one go. Don't hear of these anymore, it is such a pity! (Or maybe they are very much still going on, but since no longer a loyal customer, do not get the news). Good way to sample and compare vintages, without forking out. I suppose before online shopping was popular, brand loyalty was much stronger, and they knew they would claw back from those customers eventually.

They also never used to be such insane prices.

  • Plus 720 for WANK value, just for the brag factor

FFS it's only wine, from grapes

We need a reason for people to visit Adelaide. Let's face it, there's not that much to attract tourists here outside of Mad March. Penfold's has many international visitors dropping quite a chunk of change.

I wouldn't brag too much for doing that into your wine, it's a guaranteed way to spoil it.

      Wait…did I say that out loud…

  • Penfold's recently sold out of $168,000 bottles of wine. Apparently, selling wine for near $1k left some punters feeling like they were drinking cask wine.
