Is Amazon a Stone Age Company?

After placing an order with Amazon, I received an email asking me to FAX my card statement to them to confirm the payment method. As the same time my account is locked.

Who on earth still use FAX as a usual communication method? I'd rather personally deliver the information to their office than using a fax which is so out of date. I always think Amazon is a world-leading e-commerce site but unbelievably that Amazon is actually a Stone Age company…

So question is, where can I even find a place that can send fax?

Your local library should be able to help with a fax

    • Local Auspost?

it's harder to commit fraud via fax.

    • Harder for the recipient of the fax?

        I dont understand your question.

OP has triggered something that makes them a risk - this is an additional step.

I'd argue it's harder to spoof a fax, but irrespective, it reduces fraudulent activity

    • Ok but it’s 2018 now. They could have figured out a better way to enhance security.

You'll be happy to know that one of best ways to prevent cyber security breaches is to run legecy systems with no l1 to the internet.

    • This. They need to prove your identity. Why was your account suspended in the first place?

Amazon is actually a Stone Age company…

Sending it via email would be insecure. There is a reason why doctors use faxes still.

They don't have an office in Australia afaik.

      What else do you suggest??

Officeworks or your library will be able to help you send a fax.

      • They need to prove your identity.

It's the other way around. The supplier have the right to suspend or terminate a service as long as it's stated in their t&C. Suspension must not be in breach of the any federal or state legislation.

      • doctors use faxes for security?
Is that the same reason they still use pages?

    • You do realise that fax is just old school digital, don't you?

It's very easy to make it say what you want it to say.

Nobody who is in anyway serious about security should still be using faxes.

    • Harder to commit fraud in which way? Can't edit?

You don't even need a photoshop, just glue stick, scissors and fax machine is enough (old fashion way).

And you think faxes are secure? Seriously. If they want you to send document securely, they could easily add a document upload with SSL.

So you going to some post office/library and ask them to fax your private document, behind the counter they could easily keep a copy or log it within the fax.

It seems Amazon business practices are primitive.

      • It's the effort required to fax stuff, not the fax itself

Digital formats are easier to Photoshop. Fax is time consuming and many millennials doesn't even know how to use one let alone fabricate one.

    Australia Post, newsagent, library.

    • Most Dr's have faxes

There's a heap of online "digital fax", "efax", "email to fax" etc. services where you can send a fax over the internet and it be received at a physical number/fax machine. Just google like "email to fax". Probably a small charge for it.

You can use Cooee, the Windows Communication Manager that came with your Netcomm Roadster 14.4k Modem, or maybe even use WinFax.

    • Not when you got NBN

  • Looks like the relationship between Amazon and major Australia banks are really poor. Most online sites have security check methods such as sending a txt to card holder to confirm. Amazon just grabs your card details, blocks your account and asks you to FAX your statement. This not only brings lots of headache to customers but increases their operating cost. No wonder Amazon is doing a poor business in Australia.

  • I’m more interested in why Amazon’s needing you to do this.
Are you sure it’s legit from amazon? Not amazoon or something?

Anyway, I had to help someone fax something to the Pope in Vatican LOL
Use gofax.com.au, it’s free for the first few faxes.
Tested it myself. And it’s pay as you go, not some monthly fee.

    • I called Amazon and they confirmed it was a legit email. They told me they notified their account specialist that I don't have a fax machine so I'm still waiting for their response. Christmas gifts at risk and I don't know whether I should purchase somewhere else as they may somehow approve the payment later.

  • in the future, if you still need to use the fax service, it may consider the online fax:
    https://www.google.com/search?source=hp&ei=RIr7W62XD8On8QXj7…

really hard ot look for the fax, maybe suggest to the post office to add such service, really needs in some of the well-delveoped countries & cities.
