Real Estate Agents/Landlords Re Pets

I'm wondering what any real estate agents or landlords think about a renter asking if they can have a pet.

I've been renting a house, I think I've been a good tenant, clean, rent always on time, no neighbour problems etc. It's almost time to renew the lease and we are hoping for It to be long term. Would asking if it is OK to have a pet be a bad thing? Is it a fair question or will it put me in the pest category? lol. Basically I'd like to ask and am fine if the answer is no, but I don't want to ask if it might be seen as a red flag or something.

It would be a dog or cat if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

  • Im in same boat, imo asking is fine and its negotiating rent decrease that is more risky
its only if they noticed that a pet has been in the property that they'd get pissed .. eg marks on curtains, floors, pet smell, uneven grass, holes dug in the grass/dirt

"It would be a dog or cat if that makes any difference." - Reckon it would make a bid difference to having a budgie!!

lol I just added that cause I knew someon3 would be like "it would help if we knew what kind of Pet, it could be a crocodile for all we know".

could be a crocodile for all we know

outdoor pet, only needs an above ground pool for housing, hunts own food, keeps Jehovah preachers and doorknockers well away, low maintenance I reckon

Perfectly fine to ask, and be prepared to pay a pet bond.

If the house allows for it then I'm sure they'll grant it

  • What does your current Residential Tenancy Agreement say about having pets? It might be even in there saying its OK, might be unlikely though.

Anyway as a landlord I prefer a tenant asks BUT I do know there is nothing stopping them from having a pet without me knowing. My twice per year inspection often reveals a clean tidy home - any pet/s could have easily be minded by a friend/family for the day so when my agent goes over there - there is no pets.

  • Well that's good to know, just didn't want to seem like a problem renter to the landlord. I'll ask and hope for the best.

Petbond would be worth it to have a pet around.

    • What state are you in? They recently changed the laws in Victoria which prohibits the Landlord from saying no to pets. They also can't accept a higher bond in Vic, just the one month is the maximum.
