Can a rice connoisseur please explain what’s in this machine which can justify the price tag of my entire days wage?

Also, welcome to OzBargain and congratulations on your first post!

    • +21

your entire day's wage? Good on you, i'm wondering why you'd be asking this question if you're making getting that much. Unfortunately this rice cooker cost me 3days wages.

      • +7

Apologies, it was just an emphatic hyperbole. I don’t make that much money, but I was just trying to raise the question and have someone in the know to comment and justify the $400 price tag on a rice cooker.

          • @Icecold5000: Read this a few times, trying to understand what the (profanity) it means. Now my brain hurts, and I want the last 120 seconds of my life back! Not worth it, would not read again!

            • @apey2000: It means my after tax income is sufficient to buy one of these a day but its still a rip. Just cook your rice in a pot like asians have done for thousands of years.

        • +1

          Good response

As a male escort this is less than I charge per hour.

        • +4

Lucky you don’t charge by the inch.

    • +25

Non coffee drinkers would wonder why we pay $4 for a coffee per day when you could get a $1 one at 7/11. The answer’s pretty simple and it applies to rice and rice cookers too.

I buy koshihikari rice imported from Japan, which is about $40 a bag more than sun rice and I cook it in a $500 rice cooker. I’d recommend anyone that eats rice at least once a week get a proper rice cooker (not those sunbeam $20 ones.

      • +5

        ^ rice connoisseur right here

      • What brand are you buying and for how much?
I lived over there and miss good rice.

      • We eat rice every day and use a Breville cooker that was under $100. It works completely fine and the rice is more than satisfactory. I'm not convinced one needs to spend $400 on a rice cooker.

        • +3

Trust me, once you use it, you will be convinced. We got the cuckoo (korean brand). I wasnt convinced on spendinh $300+ on a rice cooker but wife bought it anyway. Yes i can tell you it does taste very differently. Although it works if you are into korean/japanese type of rice. If you are into middle east or south asia style of rice, i dont know how it works

    • +1

Best rice cooker brand ever imo. Some might say Panasonic or Korean ones are the same, i beg to differ. Of course if you put crappy Sunrise rice in your Panasonic and in a Tiger the result is probably the same due to the rice quality itself.
Also this is a multi-function rice cooker so i can do other things other than cook rice.

      • +2

        Have you tried Zojirushi?

        • Aren't Zojirushis all 120v and don't work in Australia? At least that's what I've seen from the models on USA's Amazon.

I have no idea where to get 240v models in australia

          • @h4xolotl: Most of South East Asia runs on 220v, so for Zojirushi to ignore the 220-240v market would be pretty dumb.

            • @t25: Which SEA countries speak English and are 220v?

I can only think of Singapore off my head

              • @h4xolotl: Why is speaking English a prerequisite for SEA market? We are talking voltages here, and what language they speak is irrelevant.

Almost every country in SEA uses 220V; in fact I think the only countries in Asia that uses 100-120V are Japan and Taiwan.

          • +1

@h4xolotl: Zojirushi do make 220-240V versions. I brought mine while travelling in Japan, still working after 6 years.

Shops like Yodobashi or other electronic/white good stores have dedicated section for 220-240V goods.

    • If you're after just a rice cooker, look for brands like Tatung (https://www.ejoy.com.au/products/tatung-tac-6gs-r-6-cup-rice…), cooks rice faster but you'll need to add water to the outside as well.

    • +1

I bought this a year ago. I adore it. It makes the rice fluffy but separate, and cooks brown rice gently so it's chewy and good but doesn't break open the rice so it goes mushy. The best thing it does though is Japanese style rice, I can now just happily eat a bowl of it plain. I buy the sunrice koshihikari rice from Woolies.

    • +2

Cooks fluffier rice with a great consistency (not too dry and not too soggy) and has the ability to not boil the crap out of it. If you use a pot you set it on a setting and it’s constant throughout the process. A good rice cooker will detect and alternate the heat going to cooking the rice.

If you go to a good Chinese restaurant and a shitty one you’ll usually notice ones rice just tastes better.

$400 for a rice cooker? Am I missing something?

    • +31

      Knowledge.

      • -3

Here in my garaaaaaaaaaaaage. Just bought this new Lamborghini here. Fun to drive up here in the Hollywood Hills. But you know what I like a lot more than knowledge? this new Lamborghini here. But you know what I like a lot more than the new Lamborghini here? My Tedx talk where I talk about this ^^new ^^Lamborghini ^^here. The. The. Thuhuhuhuhuhuuu. In fact I'm a lot more proud of these seven new Hollywood Hills that I had to get installed to hold two thousand new Lamborghinis. :| :o :| :o :| :o

It's like the Buffet Warren billionaire says, "The more you earn the more you drive up here in the Hollywood Hills." In fact, the real reason I keep this Lamborghini, is the real reason I keep this Lamborghini here is that it's a reminder. A reminder that dreams are still possible because it wasn't that long ago that I was in a little Lamborghini sleeping on bookshelves in the Hollywood Hills with only forty seven billion dollars in my bank account, and forty seven Lamborghinis in my Lamborghini account, and only forty seven hills in my Hollywood account, and only forty seven Tedx Talks where I talk about Warren Buffets in my Tedx Talks where I talk about Warren Buffet account.

But you know what? Something happened that changed my life. I bumped into a Lamborghini, and another Lamborghini, and a few more Lamborghinis. I found five Lamborghinis. I don't call it money anymore I call it fuel units. You must have enough units. You must have enough Lamborghinis. You must CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS.

I'll see you on my website. It's a quick video and you'll see there absolutely nothing!

      Quality Japan.

    • You don't know what you don't know.

  • +1

its a MULTI function cooker, not just a rice cooker first of all. Have a look at what it can do https://www.amazon.com/Tiger-JKT-S10U-K-Cooker-Stainless-5-5…

    • Is that the same model? Binglee is S10A, whilst the model you linked to is a S10U.

      • +2

        Should be the same.

I'm assuming, A stands for Australia while U stands for USA.

  • i have this rice cooker which i bought from costco for 299 before. however i didn't find it to be anymore special than other brands i had like Panasonic or Korean brand like cuckoo.

i guess it depends on the rice, the rice i have in china is much better than sun rice here.

    • +3

You can get good rice from the Asian grocers here. Sunrice isn't even worth a mention if you are serious about rice.

      • taiwanese short grain rice is where its at!

      • +11

we use to buy rice from the Asian grocers, since we're asian, until we found Australian grown rice at safeway/coles. Doesn't taste as nice but you get use to it and we'd sacrifice it for Australian grown.

    • +3

The Costco only sells the one with a much lighter interior cooking bowl which I think produce similar quality like a $100 Panasonic rice cooker. This model’s internal cooking bowl is much heavier.

      • +2

Correct. This one is an induction cooker.

  • +12
    • why do people buy $1000 phones when a $300 one does the same thing
    • why do people buy luxurious handbags that cost $5000 when a $50 one does the same.

so people that buy a $400 rice cooker it will do the same as a $100 one…

having said that i do own 2x tiger rice cookers… some things you just got spend the money on.

    • +1

lol What does a $100 one do compared to a $30 one from kmart (serious question, I eat rice daily and am curious).

      • +1

consistency of cooking the rice… cheaper ones wont cook the rice evenly…you get overcooked rice on the bottom and around edges and under cooked rice on top especially when you only cook a small amount of rice.

not all rice cookers are the same… even cheap ones.. I'm sure there are cheap ones that do the job. but you'll have to try to know.

        • +1

Also the quality of the inner pot.

Cheap rice cookers tend to have rice residue stick to it and is harder to clean, and the more you clean it the more sticky it gets over time (it's a downward spiral).

With a good quality one you should be able to clean it gently with a soft wet sponge (often you don't even need to clean it at all because there is no residue). As a result you get consistent rice over a much longer lifetime.

  • Tiger's 10 Cup version of this rice cooker is available for $50 more: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Tiger-Multi-functional-Rice-…

    • I wish…. the 10 cup one is not part of the 20% discount.

      • Oddly for the past few Bing Lee sales it's been the 10 cup one that's on sale and the 5.5 cup that's excluded.

    • Got the 10 cup version (priced at $580), from BL store in Rhodes NSW. Manage to drop it to $500 price matched with their eBay BL, tho they are hesistant at beginning. They also chuck a free floor standing fan branded "Galaxy" (Chinese made, not Japan) worth $35 they said, looks like $5 to me. No more free calendar left tho. :(
Kinda kicking myself when exited the store, forgot the Cashrewards completely!

5 cup is too tiny. My current oldie 10 yrs old Tiger is still going strong despite a few worn out parts.

  • I just upgraded to this one and you can tell the rice cooked much nicer comparing to my old $100 Panasonic. I buy sunrise brand too but the Japanese sushi rice.

    • I recently came back from Japan and bought a Zojirushi rice cooker, which will also replace my $100 Panasonic rice cooker.

      • It’s tempted to buy rice cooker there so much cheaper and so much variety. I believe you need a transmitter thing as they are 110v?

        • +3

They do sell international models with 220V, and generally come with European 2 round plugs. Although they tend to be more expensive than the local Japanese 100V models.

Note that in Asia Zojirushi is a more popular brand (and considered better) than Tiger. I bought one there which cost me around $300 for a model with induction bowl (much more expensive than this type). Non-induction types like this usually cost around $200, and non-induction local models are around $100 if you're willing to use a transformer.

To those that question the difference with cheap rice cookers, these expensive ones cook much nicer fluffy-and-not-dry rice, without burnt rice sticking to the bowl (and no burnt smell too). Also you can keep the rice warm up to 2 days without getting dry, handy for preparing the kids lunch the next morning. They also come with several options for slow/normal/fast cooking, different types of rice (white/brown/black/sticky), quinoa, congee etc. Local rice cookers really can't compare - even cheap Asian rice cookers that you can buy for about $20-30 in Asia are much better than $100 ones here. But maybe it's not worth getting this if you don't cook rice regularly.

          • @tukanglistrik: This is induction afaik

            • @stickyfingers: Ok I confused this with the Costco one (JBA-xxxx).

            • @stickyfingers: Just wondering what is the other type different to induction heater called? I wanna read more about it.. thanks

          • @tukanglistrik: I moved out this year and bought a cheap Sunbeam rice cooker and holy shit was it grim.

Like you said, rice was burnt at the bottom and dried like a husk if you waited more than 30 minutes. One time I tried cooking Brown Rice according to the "instructions" and eating it was like scraping oatmeal down my throat.

        • +1

Zojirushi > Tiger > the rest

  • How many adults, would you folks suggest this would cater for?

    • +1

I think 4-5 adults (rice only)
Btw, I have the 10 cups version (family of 4)which you still have room to put meats and seafood on top of the rice.

    • +1

It all depends how much rice you eat, you obviously don't consume rice on a daily if you're asking this question. I normally consume 1 cup at dinner, i have the 5 cup and i find it too small especially when family come over. Just throw in the extra $50 and get the 10 cup version.

      • +1

        Thank you both, great help!

    • +1

It depends, for me 1 cup = 2 adults.

      Papadums eater spotted.

      • Unfortunately papadum eaters cannot use rice cookers for perfectly cooked basmati rice, no matter how fancy or expensive they are.

  • $400 x 21 days = $8400 per month /$100 800 per annum = 252 Tiger Rice Cookers (The tax man will take 37% of the rice cookers if we are not counting net)

Yup, you can definitely afford it.

Our Family of 4 consumes 2 cups of rice (short grain) every day unless its sushi day its 3-4 cups.

    Long Grain
    Medium Grain
    Short Grain

5.5 cups are more than enough for any size of family even 10.

Note: This estimate is based on an average Asian size person so it will be not accurate to use for a supersize family.

Hmmm I wonder if this is the same model with the Costco one I saw the other day.

    • TLDR; fattties need to eat more rice

    • +1

Costco only sell the 10 cup variant but same model.

      • 👍

        • As stickyfingers pointed above, this is the induction model while the Costco one is not.

  • +1

We have this model too, from my experience you get a more consistent texture of rice and there are many different modes (as oppose to just cook & keep warm). I noticed the rice takes a lot longer to cook with these ones so best to prepare earlier than usual.

    • How long for 2 cups of rice? We have on that is also a pressure cooker so the rice is done in like 15mins

      • A pressure cooker is the next level cooking, there is no turning back

      • Normal mode is usually around 40 mins, quick mode 20 mins.

  • -6

I dunno…I don't eat rice that often - so when I do cook it I just use that $5 red Decor container in the microwave.

    https://www.decor.com.au/product/microsafe-rice-cooker-veget…

    • Wait until you try rice that’s cooked well…

    • Ha ha, on a side note I once shared house with a Korean rich kid driving sport car but cook his rice cooking exactly the same way. Causing overspill in the microwave everyday. His parents and kin must have disowned him if they come to this thread

  • +1

My in laws still have a tiger they brought over 30years ago….

  • Bought this one early this year. In terms of rice I use a mix of Akita Akafuji and Sunrice Koshihikari for cost-efficiency (approx. 1:3).
Always use the ultra mode. Simply DELICIOUS.
Price is actually a bit high (because it's a global model). Similar one in Japan costs 40% less. However too much hassle to get the 110V transformer.

    • where do you source your premium rice?

      • I got them from the asian grocery at The Glen

  • these are cheap… the rice cookers I saw in yodobashi in japan recently were going for $2000

  • Btw, its cheaper at Amazon AU @ $109 but I doubt if its genuine or price error.

edit: nvm, should have tried first before posting. It is now unavailable.

My mom bought me a Tiger rice cooker back in 2007 ($400) as a present for heading to Australia for my university education. More than 10 years later, I am still making yummy fluffy rice and it's going strong!

You can preset a timer and have freshly cooked rice when you reach home. I also use it to cook brown rice from time to time as brown rice takes a longer time to cook. The different settings are very useful.

Whenever I moved into a new rental, new housemates will balk at this machine. When their one year old $20 rice cooker broke down, they end up using my rice cooker as well and understood the quality of these Tiger rice cookers.

Morale of the story: always trust a Tiger mom ;)

  • Wow, this looks like a fancy rice cooker. My tiger rice cooker has a cook and keep warm switch and it cooks really well. Idk about spending $400+ on a rice cooker but my rice cooker was around $150 and will last very long.
