  • I feel like this should come with a disclaimer.

    Courtesy of Wikipedia:

Consumption of the plant or any of its secondary products, including mad honey, can cause a rare poisonous reaction called grayanotoxin poisoning, mad honey disease, honey intoxication, or rhododendron poisoning.

Basically, treat it as a (very) weak recreational drug. Don't eat this for the first time and then drive somewhere, for example.

    • "The most common clinical symptoms include various cardiovascular effects, nausea and vomiting, and a change in consciousness."
"symptoms may include diplopia and blurred vision, dizziness, hypersalivation, perspiration, weakness and paresthesia in the extremities and around the mouth. In higher doses, symptoms can include loss of coordination, severe and progressive muscular weakness"

      Awesome recreational drug!

      • Hahaha, I assume that's "common symptoms of the rare poisonous reaction", and not a common reaction to ingesting the honey overall. And recreational drugs having extremely bad effects on certain individuals (again, generally in fairly uncommon or rare cases) is also pretty standard.

Just something to keep in mind, not really be too worried about.

        • So what exactly is the desired outcome of consuming this honey?

          • @damion: I assume it has (perceived/possible) health benefits like most other traditional remedies do, while at the same time having weak neurological effects that might (no experience, going off wikipedia mostly) give a bit of a high(?).

I sell honey if anyone is interested. It's not mad, rare or exotic though. It's 100% aussie honey.

    • What state/area you in?
I search gumtree for the local small producers

      • I'm in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

    • …100% aussie bees & 100% aussie pollen utilised in said process? no blow in bees from overseas…?

      • +3

        457 bees?

They're all legit, have personally checked their papers. The nectar is mostly from eucalypts but cannot guarantee 100%. I can guarantee it's not from commercial crops though.

Aussie honey is often exotic! Especially all the bush honeys.

I'm interested, especially if you have any interesting dark or strong ones.

        Indeed!
I don't know if I would describe my honey as dark or strong but they rely mostly on native plants and whatever people grow in the surrounding smallholdings. People usually say the taste is more floral and intense than shop bought honey (there is plenty of good honey out there though I'm sure). I attribute it to the fact it is multifloral, raw (I don't heat it up at any stage) and it is usually very recently harvested.
