Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) at Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal

Hi, Going with family on a Royal Caribbean cruise to NZ this Christmas.
We will be departing from Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Has anyone tried the TRS office at this terminal? Is there one?
What are their opening hours? Is allocating 30 minutes enough time?
Do we have to show them the items unopened in original packaging?

Thank you.

  • Is allocating 30 minutes enough time?

Based on my experience at TRS in Melbourne multiple times - no. If you get half a dozen tourists claiming 5+ things each…. you're in strife.

    Sydney? Yes.

    Is there one?

    Yes.

    What are their opening hours?

    It was open on boarding.

Is allocating 30 minutes enough time?

In my experience yes, but allocate more to be safe.

Do we have to show them the items unopened in original packaging?

I didn't - only showed receipts and the goods. Again - your experience my vary though.

In my experience TRS is a much more organised and pleasant experience than the current bunfight at Sydney International Airport. It has always been a quick process at the OPT.

    • Thanks! Going to the OPT and was wondering if it would be similar to Sydney International Airport. I've done it at the airports a couple of times.
Good to hear it is more organised.
I assume that they would be located after Customs at OPT? Otherwise how would they know if we take the item on-board.
Do you know if they require the item (Surface laptop) to be packaged and sealed?

      • I can't remember exact location but no they don't expect an item to be packaged and sealed.

      • Updating this thread in case anyone stumbles upon it just like I did when searching for the TRS process during a cruise departure at the OPT. Basically, if your next port of call is international then there will be a TRS stand set up after you've checked in (just before you board the vessel).

However, if the ship does not leave the country immediately (next port is domestic still) then it is likely that you will find a TRS office at the final domestic port OR they will have TRS officers board the cruise at some point to process TRS refunds.
