Opinions on Holden Barina 2008 Auto

I had a Getz 2005 Auto and it will cost me over 2k to repair due to head gasket damage etc. I have come across a 2008 auto holden barina 101 000kms and in good condition. Did the rev check and everything and seems good. The seller is asking $2750. Are these good cars? Just need a little run around car until I graduate uni.

    Run. Run. Away.

No, stay away. It's not actually even a Holden, it's a rebadged Daewoo (it's called the Kolas, I think, though I might be wrong). These are notoriously bad cars which you'd want to avoid. If you're looking for a good run around until you graduate uni, I'd get an old Toyota Echo, much more reliable than this Daewoo and easily available for similar prices.

For example, something like this would suit you - https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Toyota-Echo-2005/…. If you don't mind something a bit banged up on the outside, this looks pretty good too - https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Toyota-Echo-2004…. Auto or manual are both fine, depending on what you want to drive.

Lots of others at around similar prices depending on what state you're in.

Absolute shitboxes. Buy another getz and don't overheat it.

    • How are they shitboxes? What happens with them? Yeah I regularly serviced it and topped up the coolant etc but it all sort of happened suddenly and had a head gasket leak.

        The barina is a shitbox.

        Getz is fine

        • everyone says its a shitbox haha I just want to know why?

@mynameisjeffsdog: originally barinas were sourced from japan and Opel. i.e. reliable, ok-ish cars
            then holden went to daewoo.

            poor safety rating.
            uninspiring to drive
            bland car

it could be fine as a car. just not much of a car.

as suggested above - toyota echo or other japanese car

@mynameisjeffsdog: It just breaks a lot. For an old clunker that you want to depend on to get from A to B, there are just better cars (e.g. a Toyota Echo).

I'm not saying that cars that break a lot are bad by definition, but the Barina has no redeeming qualities. In other words, why would you want to buy one when you can get a Toyota Echo for a similar price.

            @mynameisjeffsdog:

Common issues with the TK throughout the model run were Holden's use of an unusual all-plastic thermostat housing design on the engine, which could fail and split apart due to repeated stress and heat cycles. The ABS system is known for electrical faults and failure of the ABS system to operate if the warning light illuminates. Front tire wear was high in the early 2006 models due to factory suspension camber settings, which were revised by 2008. Automatic transmission TK cars were also the subject of a recall due to internal shift solenoids not allowing the car to shift higher than 3rd gear.

And that is just the Wikipediaentry.

They are terrible all round. It is a Daewoo Kalos. Water pumps fail, timing belt tensioner fails, auto trans often very noisy, coil packs fail, ECUs fail. Interior made of recycled $2 shop plastic. Always seem to go through rhf brakes for some reason.

Are you sure it's the head gasket on your getz? If it hasn't been overheated the odds of it being that are very low.
