I'm a New PS4 Man - Whats next?

Hello there.

Usually a PC gamer, but Red Dead got me thinking about getting a console and decided on the PS4 after the amount of exclusives I've been really wanting to play/try - any who after too much wine - I pulled the trigger on a recent Amazon special (the pro 1tb with free spiderman).

Buyers remorse along with the hangover kicked in the following morning but couldn't cancel the order. No matter the remorse subsided after 20 mins or so of playing Spiderman. Now I'm excited to make the most of my new toy.

While RDR2 and Horizon Zero Dawn already in mind - I ask myself whats next?

  1. PS Plus - Worth it? I'm not that much of a multiplayer gamer truth be told. Xbox live had value with the freebies you could keep after your subscription ended. It does not appear to the case with PS Plus.

  2. Playstation Online Accounts - Over the years I've read multiple stories of peoples PS accounts being banned unfairly or due to a hackers action, with no appeal process/shitty customer service losing a digital collection permanently. Is this still the case? Anyone with good experiences with this situation - My Origin/EA account was recently hacked/hi-jacked (My fault) does make me hesitant in building an online collection

Anything else I should know that would help me get the most of my new toy would be appreciated - you know the sort of stuff that wouldn't become immediately apparent to someone who hasn't touched a Sony since PS2

As fellow value hunters your opinions/answers are much appreciated!

  • I haven't played PS4, but I've heard PS Plus is worth it when you consider the monthly games included.

    1. Depends, I have it but not sure how worth it is, I haven't played multiplayer much recently either. You should get a free month or so when you start your account so it will probably give you a better idea on its worth. I still have mine though. PS Plus does give you free games though, usually they're not amazing but I'm happy with it, they only work while you have PS Plus though. Usually its best to do it in between changing months because you get the free games of the previous month and the upcoming month.

    2. Yes, which is why I'm hesitant with buying games online because you can lose your entire collection. The biggest issue is if you get hacked, and some hacker charges your account say $20, but being the normal person you are the first thing you most likely did is contact you bank and get your card frozen (which is what everyone would do) Sony will insta ban you because the funds didn't come across. Its stupid IMO and I think you're technically supposed to contact Sony first (though they're only open mon to fri like 9 to 5 and only in certain countries). In any case I'd definitely recommend getting 2 factor authentication to keep your account safe. Also if you go into Sony forums over being hacked most people will just blame you over it because you didn't have 2fa. I have heard you can buy a sony gift card to pay back the missing funds to get your account back though.

As with all consoles though, guessing you bought it for the games, theres some awesome ones there and PS4 has some amazing exclusives I'd definitely get and play, niggling issues aside theres definitely a lot of fun to be have with the games. I also use it for media (youtube, Netflix etc). Don't forget to add friends as they can be fun to play with as well!

Yes that is correct my good sir. Forgive me forgot to include the Last of Us.

  • Games which are almost always in everyone's list of must haves:

    • The Last of Us
    • Horizon Zero Dawn
    • Uncharted 1-4 (ie. Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection + Uncharted 4: A Thief's End)
    • God of War

I'd also recommend looking into Rocket League if you're after a more multiplayer-focused game, as the others are primarily single-player focused. Obviously, if you're into a specific sport, then may be worth getting that too (eg. FIFA, NBA, F1, etc.)

Regarding PS+, I would not get it if your main reasoning behind it is for the free games. It is quite underwhelming tbh, and that's for me who isn't even looking forward to the free games. I can't imagine how it'd feel if you are actively hoping to receive a good game each month. IMO, the main reason for PS+ is to have the option to play multiplayer. While I don't have much time to play online as I used to when I was younger, I still simply want the ability to be able to play multiplayer whenever I want to without having to worry about going through the hassles of making a new account to get a free trial each time.

That being said, once in a while you do get the odd good game, but that is definitely only once in a while. People are saying/assuming the monthly free games will be improving next year as Sony will no longer be providing free games for the PS3 and PSVita, so theoretically they'd have a larger budget/incentive to provide better games since they will still only be giving 2 PS4 games per month.

But other than that, enjoy! There's definitely no reason to be regretting your purchase.

    The Last of Us

  • Bloodborne is one of the best exclusives for PS4.

  • Our free games library never gets played.

It’s pretty much been Horizon Zero Dawn, Fortnite (yes, I know), and a bit of Rocket League here.

My wife liked the game with the big goat/dog thing…can’t remember what that was called…

just use two factor authentication and turn off messages from everybody and friends of friends.

use ps plus from cheaper regions if the price is too much for Oz

    • Plus 1 this. My account was hacked once years back. Recovered it and 2FA with my phone. Been fine since.

  • Personally I would be interested in the psvr side having tried a bit of htc vive I would like to compare.

Otherwise yeah some of the exclusives so far mentioned are good.

  • God of War = absolutely must own game, this is not even debatable. Other than that, I would grab the Uncharted Legacy Collection or whatever it's called, it's the original trilogy remastered for PS4. Since those games are story driven I would recommend playing them in the correct order, even if the first game is a little dated by todays standards, stick to it and you'll have an amazing experience! Obviously, after that, Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Definitely also get The Last of Us Remastered, again, a little dated on the PS4 as it was a PS3 title, but it's an amazing game. Horizon Zero Dawn is good as well, though I would recommend getting the other games mentioned here first. Another game worth checking out is Shadow of the Colossus, originally a PS2 game, but they pretty much rebuilt it from the ground up, so it's completely modern now.

As for PS Plus, have a look at the games you got free last year and decide based on that…
