Maximising Virgin Velocity points to get the cheapest reward flight possible

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Alrighty folks, so I recently got the American Express Velocity Platinum card, and have become slightly obsessed with points maximizing. After a little bit of looking around here’s the cheapest way I could find to get a flight via spending, a fair wack of this will probably be outdated by the time you’re reading it however the thought experiment is one I think people might find interesting;

(Note: I may be wrong about these figures please take them with a pinch of salt and correct me if necessary)

First thing’s first we’re gonna want to get ourselves a Flybuys, and a Virgin Velocity account,

once signed up for those we’ll want to link them here;
https://www.flybuys.com.au/my-account/#/linked-accounts/mana…

then we’ll want to link our flybys account to our eBay account here;
https://www.ebay.com.au/flybuys/

then, we’ll want to activate the following promo which gives us 10 Flybuys points per $1 spent on eBay;
https://www.ebay.com.au/flybuys/dashboard?promoCode=EBAYDECX…

lastly, once the Flybuys account and promo are linked to our eBay account, we’ll want to go to eBay through the following portal, which gives us 1 Velocity point for every $1 spent;
https://estore.velocityfrequentflyer.com/department-stores/e…

Now comes the math’s which will probably be wrong but let’s see;

Flybuys lets you transfer 2000 points into 870 velocity points, therefore with the 10 Flybuys points per dollar promo it takes $200 to get 870 velocity points. To add to this, Velocity is currently offering an extra 15% Velocity points per Flybuys transfer, meaning our total points per $1 so far equals;

870 x 1.15 ÷ 200 = 5.0025 points per $1

As we’re shopping through the Velocity portal we can add 1 point per $1 to that giving us 6.0025 points per $1

And finally, for my individual situation, any purchases on the Velocity Platinum Amex gives me 1.5 points per $1, taking the grand total to;

7.5025 Velocity points per $1

(Some research suggests this is the best Velocity points earning card available in Australia however I’d love to be shown otherwise, I know more points are applicable on international transactions however I’m assuming an international purchase would cancel out the Flybuys bonus)

The cheapest reward flight available through Virgin costs 7,800 points, meaning, a flight is obtainable with a $1040.00 spend on eBay.

2 things to note here, firstly I’m aware you could get multiple flights worth of points just from signing up for certain cards, i.e. I got 90k Velocity points just for signing up for mine, but the method detailed here is meant to be scalable and repeatable and not a once off thing,

secondly you might be able to use Cashrewards or Shopback for 1% off the total cost using the browser extensions making it $1030.00, however I think this may interfere with the extra 1 point per $1.

Lastly, promo codes can be found for some virgin flights however I don’t believe the promo codes apply discount to rewards seats.

Hope you enjoyed reading this and any contributions are greatly appreciated, nothing is a better price than free ;)

    • Hahaha yeah the 10 flybuys points starts tomorrow but it happens pretty often so this is likely to work again in the future

  • @DracoManX69 - I appreciate the time you took creating your contribution

    it might be worth pointing out that reward flights are easier to get , rather than @ Qantas

    You definitely wont be able to claim both cash back and velocity portal since both methods depend on your last click coming from that portal.
