Avoid these bike rack if you want to carry more than 2 bikes and only if bike have standard horizontal bar. I gave up and put it on gumtree then tried the https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Giantz-Towbar-Towball-Hitch-Ball… and is quite good, fit 4 bikes well.

    • I keep looking at these and the only thing that holds me back (well, apart from the relatively high price compared to the basic one in the deal) are concerns over the strain placed on the tow ball. Have you found that there's much movement or slipping with these?

      • I find it well, taken it out ~ 10 times with 2x 26 ich, 1x 24 ich and 1x 16 ich without issues, I do worry when i see a large pot hole on the road and definitely slow down much more when hitting speed-bump just in case. You do need to see what your towball capacity is as fully loaded with the bike carrier it will be around 75kg and i would not recommend if this is your maximum vertical wt load on your tow ball is also 75kg max. Most often vertical load is 10% of the recommended towable wt for the towbar.

    • Yeah they're much better and easier to use, but priced accordingly. I've got one, similar to the one posted, and it handles 2 adult and 2 kids bikes, but it's tight.

  • Any recommendation for those who don’t have a tow bar?

I owned this exact bike carrier. A couple of considerations before you buy:

    1) Make sure you have the required tools (and strength!) to remove the tow ball from the tongue to install the mount (both the nut underneath the tow ball, and a wrench to hold the top portion).

    2) This carrier is no good if you have a bike with a wide/thick frame on the horizontal. Once the carrier caters to that bike, the other bikes won't secure properly due to the fact that the mounting plate is a single inflexible part.

    3) It doesn't tilt, so if you want access to a hatch back boot (even a zero opening one like a VE Commodore Sportwagon), all the bikes and the carrier has to be removed (MASSIVE pain in the bum). The carrier frame does disconnect quite easily from the bottom mount, but still a pain with bikes still on it. I strongly suggest you triple check boot clearance when opening before purchase (look at position of tow ball and check clearance of boot… there's NOT a lot of wiggle room at all).

It's otherwise built quite well, and provided you retighten the tow ball properly after installing the bottom mount, you wont get any movement.

My review/advice is to not purchase however. Spend a little more and get a bike carrier that a) tilts to allow access to the boot, and b) allows adjustable bike mounting positions separate to each bike.
