Amex Becoming Aware of Cashback redemptions by purchasing GCs

Hi all, just a PSA.

Bought 2x $300 gcards on DJs to try and get $50 back.
Also tried to buy $350 QF voucher to get $50 back on the recent spend and saves.

None have credited cashbacks to my amex accounts so perhaps theyre checking the transactions for g/c purchases. Anyone else having this problem?

  • i bought a $42 bottle of champagne from Dans hoping for the cashback. Never got anything from Amex :/

I bought $40 GC from dans and got it from AMEX.

I’d contact Amex to ask questions but would have no leg to stand on when they ask to see the receipt which would clearly show i breached the t/c for the promo.

  • Bought a dan Murphy one yesterday and triggered an email right away. Just tried to buy another one using different credit card after seeing this post and no email

    • I got emails for all 3x transactions, but none credited on my transaction list, whereas the Boozebud one has.

How long did you wait, took me 4 days to get my dans credit.

        • 3 days now

@Ozbargainlyf: Just be patient, my menulog legitimate spend hasn't shown up yet and it's been 3 days. I got the email and everything.

By legit I mean non gift card

  • The Qantas one is sure easy to track but Dan’s should be credited no problems.

  • Did u register for the offers? I got the cashbacks for all gc purchased.

  • And fyi dm gc r not excluded.

  • +1

Did you buy the physical cards?

"Excludes payments made for eGift Cards and products from David Jones Flowers, Luxaflex, Miele, The Daily Edited, and Ultraceuticals.
Excludes all payments made to David Jones Corporate Services."

    • Fully aware of the t/cs. They were never able to track it previously, which is the point of this post.

      • +3

It's not what you buy, but who processes it.

The last I used an Amex/DJ's online only offer. It was for physical gift cards because egift cards weren't processed by regular DJ's. BTW, I don't know if that's still the case for online purchases of physical gift cards today.

It's not unlike Woolies Online and Woolies gift cards, ie different companies processing the orders.

        • +1

DJs eGift cards are now processed by DJs Online themselves since the new website launched in May

What is the point of this thread?

You breached T&C and didn't get credited by AMEX. Want a medal?

    • +1

Pointless thread now as Op is panicking like I have in the past

Probably be the most important thread of the year if it’s true and Amex has updated their system

      • -1

When has Buying DJ gift cards with AMEX offers ever worked?

        • You mean hasn’t ?

        • +1

Many times, including with the current Amex offer.

        • Every other time is has. And another example of this would be Apple products with the Harvey Norman deals. The list goes on if Amex are actually checking the transactions.

We are acutely aware it is a gamble against the TCs but this loophole has been exploited for a while. God forbid I try and cheat the great people of Amex $50.

Will check statement again in a couple of days

          • @Ozbargainlyf: Does the AMEX offer still work when buying HN gift cards?

            • @smuggler: Not sure but i’ve bought an Ipad previously and its credited

              • @Ozbargainlyf: Ditto re: iPad

It should work as they can’t tell what you buy from Harvey Norman

          • @Ozbargainlyf: That would be because of HN. Only the retailer can identify what is purchased and chose to make those exclusions.

            • @[Deactivated]: So has anyone actually used it this time to buy HN gift card and got the $50 back and the points? TIA

      • -3

        Agree re importance.
Amex is well aware of this site and the constant bragging that goes on regarding cheating the system.
They also have the right to go back and look at prior purchases to see if conditions have been breached.
If the constant braggers think they couldn't check you are in dreamland.
With regard to the current HN and DJ offers in store gift card purchase are not excluded in the conditions and are good way of ensuring credits for luxury items like Miele and Apple plus you have 3 years to spend.
I have used both offers multiple times and got credits for all within two days.
I also rang Amex to confirm that in store gift cards did qualify and had them note the call on my profile.
Smarties abusing the system and bragging about it here will eventually lead to Amex cracking down.
I was recently negged 5 times in relation to a gift card question so fully expect this comment to incur the same wrath.
Go for it boys and girls.

        • I also rang Amex to confirm that in store gift cards did qualify and had them note the call on my profile.

I'm not going to neg you, but that was silly to ask Amex about that in my opinion as it could mean more stringent reporting in the future e.g. during Vogue Fashion Night Out time

          • -2

            @kerfuffle: lol… only took 30 secs.

silly to ask them about what?

and please please no negs… would ruin Christmas for whole family

            • -3

              @IanC: Oh Dear,

Xmas is ruined , the kids are crying.

          • -1

@kerfuffle: 3 minutes for first response and still no backup to accusation 4 hours later

            Who's looking silly ?

Wife is inconsolable over the negging.

            • +2

@IanC: You seriously need to get a life. If your wife is married to you, no wonder she's inconsolable. Not my fault you can't comphrend. 🙄

              • -1

@kerfuffle: no, my wife is not married to me. classic oxymoron

and still no answer to the question

the dog found out about the negging and won't stop howling.

                • +6

@IanC: OK. Let me make it clear for you.

It was silly to ask Amex whether buying gift cards in store would qualify for the statement credits as it could lead to Amex actually checking on what we buy in store for future promotions. I don't know what Amex you have, but with DJs Amex cards, they can definitely tell when you buy gift cards in store.

If you can't understand that, then I have nothing further to say.

                  • @kerfuffle: Couldnt agree more

If you think everyone posting here is going make the chances or future chances if credits decrease

Yet you go and contact amex directly and ask the question is any different

Then you have rocks in your head

              • -1

                @kerfuffle: Anyway its Xmas.

Lets take a deep breath and bury it all.

                Life far too short.

  • Update; the DJs ones have credited but Qantas unfortunately still hasnt.

  • OP, did you buy physical gift cards in store, or an egift card from the DJ's web site?

    • OP wouldn’t get the credit if they did the former

    • egift card from website

  • Got the amex credit but DJ cancelled my order three times.. only 1 x DJ worked for me

    • So you got the credit without even having to buy the gift card (after the refund)?

      • +3

Doubt it. Amex would have reversed the credit unless for some reason the refund was done as Market Street rather than Online.

  • +1

Had a few not work for gift cards recently.

Dan Murphys - not working (got an email but no refund), (also bought some items from Iconic at a similar time, got the email and the refund on the card)
Forever New - not working (never got an email)
MAC Cosmetics - not working (this one says I redeemed the offer and got the email, but no refund on the card)(originally showed on card as one merchant, however changed to one call MAC Gift cards so this one is fair enough)

    • Ok update on this.

Out of the blue mac and Dan Murphys cash back showed up. Still no forever new, but it seems other people had the same experience

      • My experience is when you get the email, you will definitely get the refund. It just takes a few days.

  • How long did it take for DJ to process the gift card and how did it take before you received your DJ credit?

    • 1 day and 5 for the credit

  • for DJ got 2 credits no e cards then they refunded both invoices and reversed credits and sent a letter asking if i still wanted to dispute the DJ charges even though i didn't initiate it.

    • what did you buy?

      • eGift Cards going by the comment

  • This may be hijacking the thread, but if you close your account/card do Amex let you keep cashback credits which have already been credited to your account recently?

    • Yes, they're applied as credits on your statement when the transaction goes through.

  • Just a side track but for those using gift cards at David Jones - tried to use an e-gift card given to me from a friend via screenshot and was told it is company policy that they cannot accept e-gift cards without the original giftcard email. First time hearing this but what a ridiculous policy if it was gift from friend via Whatsapp and not the gift card email.

    • +1

Ask for that in writing or ask them where it says on the website. That policy didn't exist when I stopped working for David Jones in October.

Better yet, ask on social media like their Facebook page to see what they say

      • Manager was called and he also said the Sales Assistant was right. Said it was head office policy because of fraud, and, if I wanted to complain, I can complain to head office. After deliberating my case that it was an Xmas gift, he was nice enough to 'compromise' by stating if the gift card barcode 'scans' then he will allow me to use it - which obviously it did!

I went through the website and its terms and conditions, and, as you said, there is no written rule that you must show the original e-mail. Funny thing is that the T&C does state to treat the gift card like cash. In that case, would DJ start asking their customers whom want to pay by cash where the source of cash is from?

Please provide your ATM slip before I will accept your cash……….

I had a similar thing at jb hifi.

      Went in with my $500x2
Shop asisstant wrote down the balance on the piece of handrwritten paper i had written down the numbers.
      Spent $800

A week later i went in to buy a $12 cable, and same assistant refused to let me use it again despite shr recognising her own handwriting.

Had to dig throguh the emails on the spot
