PSA: When Upgrading SSDs, Dont Bother Using Clone or Mirroring Software, It Wont Be 100% Functional

With all these SSD sales, alot of us will be upgrading SSD's, I did, from Samsung 850 Pro 256GB to Samsung 970 Evo M.2 500GB, i used 2 different cloning software, both paid, both worked but something will always not work, its not worth the hassle of trying to pinpoint whats wrong, just reformat fresh and clean :D

Has worked flawlessly for me on several different systems.
    YMMV

Has always worked for me. And I've only used free stuff…

    Clonezilla is your friend

Always do a fresh install of OS. It might seem scary but it's not. It may take a little longer but it is worth the effort. Why transfer sh!t from one hard drive to the next?

    • what about drivers for laptop

      trackpads , gesture, hotkeys, etc.

      • Windows 10 is actually really good at drivers. Worst case is visit manufactures website/support/drivers for latest versions. Again, a lot easier than we are often led to believe.

  • Always worked for me. I used the free utilities to transfer/clone.

PSA YMMV and most likely doing it wrong ;)

No issues for me using cloning software.

  • Doesn't Samsung have their own great cloning software?

    • +2

I have used the Samsung software previously and it's worked perfectly.

  • I always reinstall windows anyway so you know it's a fresh install and will have no issues.

    It's worked fantastically for me.

    And, also:

    A lot is two words.

Lol. I had a nice laugh here.

You've corrected someone's spelling using a sentence with poor grammar.

Your sentence should begin with the subject.

Both of you should stop being pedants about antiquated rules regarding English language that aren't appropriate for an internet forum.

  • I guess you mean "It's not always functional for me. OP?

I've used 'Casper' since it was 'Casper XP', to back up/clone my SSD's for years and before that my HDD's and it's never let me down.

  • I've used cloning software and it has usually worked. I have had issues where it has detected a new system drive and I rang MS and it got sorted.

If you have a good data backup process it can be worthwhile to do a fresh install anyway.

  • Let me guess OP, you're using Windows 7?

  • I use a physical cloner I picked up on here a few years ago. Provided the target drive is exactly the same or bigger than the original drive it just moves everything byte for byte (if not it won't start). Completely flawless in the 3 clones I've done.

Also just had to google "YMMV" - definitely OP, your mileage may vary.

  • This is not accurate. I've cloned hundreds of drives onto SSDs (at work), all different operating systems too including some obscure ones. You're just doing it wrong.

"Something will always not work" is BS.

  • It does work but i would HIGHLY recommend against it, it's not reliable. Fresh install will be so much better.

  • I tried to do it using coloning software and it all went to shit

    • I tried to do it using coloning software and it all went to shit
I'm not surprised it went to shit . How deep did you go with the coloning ?

  • If you do it right, it works.

However, you have a point though too - I thin kthe problem is, you did SATA to NVME - it's a bit more complicated then. Yeah?

  • I just did it with only Win 10 tools. Not even a hiccup. I did consider using the Samsung migration aid and anyone considering it should read what it doesn't do.

I backed up using Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
Mounted the new drive and run the Win 10 installer to the point where it created the right partitions on the drive. Backup and Restore (win 7) won't do all of them.
Exited the win 10 installer then started the installer again and selected Repair instead of install.
Some where in the options you will get the chance to do a restore.
    All done.
Note that it will not enlarge the partitions. You may have to use other software for that.
Note also that I am using the GPT disk structure and partitioning not MBR.
My machine does not support NVME (for booting).
