Air Purifiers to get rid of Cigarette Smoke

Hey all,

Ive just moved into an apartment. Its pretty hot these days and I like to keep my windows and doors open letting the fresh air in.

Unfortunately there seems to be a few smokers in my apartment and since I live in the ground floor I constantly get a whiff of cigarette smoke. Not only I dont smoke but its making my allergies worse.

Its so frustrating - im wondering if anyone has the same problem and how they've dealt with it?

Im thinking of buying an air purifier but unsure which ones would work.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Contact your jurisdiction's environmental-protection agency and its legal-aid bureau. Be willing to make a formal complaint.

  • The wire cutter suggests you will need a significant amount of activated charcoal to remove cigarette smoke.
It still will not be perfect and it adds so much to the price.

Activated charcoal purifiers seem difficult to find, but this one below has 2.5kg of charcoal and is about $800.

I think the problem you’ll have is that you will smell the smoke and your body will react faster than the purifier will remove the odour and particulate, so while a purifier will work in cleaning the air you’ll still have the same issues. The close the windows comment may have been made in gest but it’s probably the best solution for your health also.

Join the campaign to legalise vaporisers. It might still smell a bit but you wont get the nasty smoke that you do from normal ciggies. For some reason the idiots that are running (ruining?) the country are opposing it, the only logical reason I can think of is because they WANT people to die of lung cancer.

    (p.s. I don't smoke either way.)

    • legalise vaporisers.

Tobacco may kill you but at least you'll look cool while it happens. Sure you'll eventually cough up a blackened lung or two, but no-one is going to call you gay.

      • But gay is the new smoking, all the cool kids are doing it. :)

(srly though my dad and my bro were lifelong smokers who got onto the vape a few years back and reckon it's much healthier..relatively speaking. And I don't recall gagging wheneever they have their vapes out.)

          I've no problem with that.

I was going to get some a few years back for my various bogan siblings, never did get around to it. Smoking killed the old man, they won't be far behind.

But the whole vaping "scene", yeah… gayer than Oxford St during Mardi Gras.

          • @D C: I'll take your word for it. I have no interest in it personally but from a social and health aspect I think that people who want to use them should have access to them immediately.

I'd be quite happy to see smoking banned "and here's your vape, have a nice life".

I'm old enough to remember when pubs all had that smoke cloud at the ceiling, and having to wash it all out of yourself and your clothes the next day. Good riddance.

But vaping as a 'hobby' is rather stupid.

    • Those juicy taxes?

About 7.5 billion annually according to here: https://www.businessinsider.com.au/an-australian-senator-has…. That's $8 less half in a billion in costs.

Senator David Leyonhjelm is of course a well known dill, but no-one disagrees with the numbers. I'd argue the costs number is probably a little low (eg littering isn't included) and the social cost is a bit tough to calculate but eh.

Probably a bit difficult to squeeze $7.5 billion out of the vapers.

  • Look up @ieatblog on Instagram he's got some good reviews and progress on one.

  • Hey sorry to comment on an old thread but have you found a solution? I'm facing the same issue

    • Go and get some charcoal or used coffee ground

    • We've realised most of the smoke are coming from residents littering their cigg butts that havnt been put out.

We've raised concerns to our strata and they've issued warnings. It has helped somewhat but there are still a few d!*&ks still doing it.

Its continual and frustrating battle but you have to learn to live with it and take the appropriate actions to report and follow up. There are a few of us on ground floor that have children and pets and they play and pick up all sorts of things.

I got the Xiao mi air purifier - doesnt really help to be honest. Usually try to keep balcony clean.

(yes i know this reply is almost a year ago now! hope this helps)

      • Hahaha ah it's okay I've since moved out of that place! Yeah I got a purifier and it didn't help much. Thanks tho yeah for the update :)
