Game Recommendations!

Hey Friends!

I'm looking for some game recommendations to play over the summer break. I generally enjoy all different types of games, but mostly play action/adventure and fighting games. I don't mind shooters, but I'm more interested in campaign than online mode. I'm not good enough to have a good experience playing shooters online.

I have a PC and Nintendo Switch.

Some games I've recently been playing:

  • Dragonball Fighterz - I absolutely love this game and sink about an hour into it every day in online play. I love fighting games and already have Street Fighter V and Tekken 7.

  • Battlefield One - I really liked the Battlefield 4 campaign back in the day, but never got round to playing BF1. Since I'm looking to get BF5 soon, I thought I'd go through BF1. To be honest, I prefer the more sci-fi style of BF4 compared to the more historical BF1.

  • Legend of Zelda BOTW - I'm nowhere near completing this game, but it's my go to when I'm out and about with my Switch. It's becoming a bit of a tough slog though. I haven't made much progress in ages.

I've already looked at some of the more common Switch games - e.g. Mario and Smash Bros. If you have any recommendations, especially PC titles, please let me know :) I'm also looking to try out new genres like racing (car) games. I've been looking to buy F1 2018 recently! If anyone knows much about the new Assassin's Creed, defs let me know too.

Thanks Everyone!!

    • No you don't need an Xbox to use it, just windows 10 :)

Oh really? I had no idea. That's actually great. Thanks for that.

    • Worth it for halo wars.

Halo wars 1 was fun as hell. Story was fairly good.

To bad the second apparently didn't have a bunch of cutscenes like #1.

  • Snake Pass

    This title seems interesting.

    • It's unique and fun (often frustrating)

  • Install steam, look at the top 10 rated games, find them discounted, enjoy.

  • Far Cry
    Wolfenstein
    Tomb Raider
    Red Dead
    Subnautica
    Doom
    Quantum Break
    Titanfall
    Red Dead
    Monster Hunter
    Shadow Warrior
    Outlast
    Evil Within
    Middle Earth
    Assassin's Creed

Not sure red dead's on PC.

Besides that, I'd absolutely agree with these.

I'd personally recommend assassin's creed 4 black flag, as well as the much shorter one that released on the last gen consoles at the same time as unity (sorry, can't remember the name).

Make sure you're picking up titan fall 2 by the way.

        AC Rogue?

  • Spacelords (free2play).

    Portal/Portal 2 for PC

Excellent games. Theres also Steam workshop for Portal 2 and the free mod Portal Stories: Mel which is a very polished piece of work which I highly recommend after completing the base games.

I assume you've played Witcher 3? If not, do yourself a favour, srlsy best game ever. (And I've been playing stuff for almost 40 years)

    • This.

Perhaps Forza Horizon 3/4 for a racing game. You need a somewhat beefy PC for it though. Test Drive Unlimited 2 has aged a bit but is still good.

      • I have Forza Horizon 3 and 4 on the PC and have been playing it here and there. I do like the open world design, but was looking more for a pure racing game.

I have Witcher 3, but I haven't made a start on it yet, looks like I'll have to move that up the list!

  • Stick with Zelda, aim for the towers, or just grab a horse and ride around discovering new things.

Subnautica. Great places to start for Survival games. You'll get probably 30+ hours out of it and develop a fear of deep water.

It's also going to be free in 2 day: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/423189

    • Absolutely make sure to grab that deal. Free game that's excellent.

Well… mostly. Lets plays have showed me the performance is god awful.

  • OP has Nintendo Switch and no one has mentioned "Pokemon Let Go Pikachu/Eevee". It's got fighting and action and adventure! But seriously, it's actually a pretty fun game based off the original red/blue, but I think it's a far better game than the originals ever were. Some purists will be along shortly to flame me and downvote the crap out of this, but I think it is a great game.

Also, for the Switch, if you don’t have it already, get Splatoon 2. It is both single and multiplayer, but is more co-op based online play with a really cool twist. It's fun, fast paced and frantic. I've found it to be way more addictive than I thought it would be.

As for PC. Install Steam and go nuts.

For driving sims, I wouldn’t start out with an F1 game. Like others have said above, get into the Forza series. I like Forza Horizon series for their massive open world maps and much easier playability. Then move up to Forza and take on some race tracks from all over the world, start with small cars, move up to hyper cars. Then, if that stops being a challenge, then move onto F1 simulators.

I'm just not too sure Pokemon is worth the money for me. I've played through the original Red/Blue so many times and then again on GBA with the Fire Red/Leaf Green versions. Basically I know the game routes off by heart now, so unless things have changed dramatically, I probably won't find it much fun aside from the nostalgia aspect.

I have Splatoon 2, it's actually heaps of fun, especially the local splitscreen. I have Arms as well, but was a bit disappointed with Arms.

That's good advice actually, about driving games. I used to play a lot of Need for Speed and Burnout…etc. when I was younger, but I wouldn't really call them serious racing games. But yeah, I do have Forza Horizon 3 and 4, so I might play through that a bit more before getting F1.

Pokemon Let's Go is fun, but yeah probably not worth the buy. The new mechanics make it a bit more fun and less grindy though. I would recommend borrowing from a friend, or, buying from EB games and racing through it and returning it at the end of the week. There is postgame stuff but after finishing it I have only played about 2 hours further and aren't really motivated to continue.

        • Sounds like all the 3D games have been then :(

        • For me, I'd really be interested in seeing how they managed to translate the 2D world into 3D.

          • @p1 ama: It's pretty to look at but still the exact same game

    • Objectively it had better be. If you can't outclass a game…over 2 decades old? You're doing something wildly wrong.

  • you love fighting games but haven't mentioned the king of fighters? cmon man.. if you like dbfz then play guilty gear, UNIEL, at least Blazblue (same maker as dbfz)

    • you love fighting games but haven't mentioned the king of fighters? cmon man..

I just haven't had the chance to play it yet!

if you like dbfz then play guilty gear, UNIEL, at least Blazblue (same maker as dbfz)

I have guilty gear, I'll try out UNIEL and Blazblue. I've been playing the new Soul Calibur recently and it's been great fun.

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

    • Also if you're finding BOTW hard, I recommend steering clear of Dark Souls

      • I wouldn't say it's hard, it's more that it's a very long game without clear objectives. I've always been more of a Mario fan than a Zelda fan, I really prefer the more closed world design with clear objectives.

  • Monster hunter

  • finish BOTW. theres plenty of youtube videos to help get past a few difficult areas, farm rupees, etc. its a waste not finishing it!

    • Yeah, I might do that. I've been wanting to just play through the game slowly at my own pace without looking things up, but it looks like I've reached the stage where I really have to.

      • If you want a hint without risk of getting spoiled I am happy to help. The whole fun of the game is in exploration and discovery, so I agree, best to stay clear of YouTube or guides for help!

  • +1

FTL. It's really really hard and so much fun. Every time you play is different. Don't need a high spec machine to play.

    • I'd add Into the Breach to this as well. Played it more than FTL :)

  • Call of Duty MW (specifically 4, not the remastered one… that's overpriced), MW2, MW3.

Mind that, don't buy untill they're on sale. The campaigns are great and the "spec ops" mode is good fun (especially if you have a mate to play it with…good times). But they're old games…they aren't still worth $20 - $40. Not if you're only wanting to play the campaign and spec ops modes anyways.

Beyond that. Borderlands 2 (you don't need to play 1, I haven't). The gameplay's a bit on the "good but not great" side, but christ is that games story great… especially the writing.

I'd add more, but pretty much all of them have been thrown out already so I'd just be echoing. Note that the above games are all FPS's.

Actually…not sure if it is, but if halo the masterchief collection is finally on PC, make sure to grab that.

    Stores:
    COD games - steam
    Borderlands - steam
Halo (if actually available) will be on Microsofts store.

  • Nintendo Switch: Diablo 3. I’ve never played Diablo before but own a Switch and saw that the game had great reviews. I can’t put it down once I pick it up; so much loot to be had! When it’s on sale, I would highly recommend buying a copy. You can also play multiplayer co-op on the same console, which is great fun!

  • Get Xenoblade 2 and Tales of Vesperia. they are very good games.
