Best Phone for Older Person

Hi all
Advice on the best phone to buy for an over 80 year old. He is computer literate but stubborn when it comes to phones and has rejected an old Iphone 4S as too busy on the screen.
We need something easy to use with big type. Only needs phone and easy text messaging.

  • Nokia 8110 (banana phone?)

Auspost also sells the Opel Flip / Aspera f24, which has oversized buttons for easy typing. Aspera has a secondary exterior display for showing time. However there's no 4G modem on these.

  • Hi,
Telstra (and others) have the EasyCall 4 by ZTE.

  • These look great as a phone, but there is no way he is going to be able to text with them.

    • Phones with QWERTY keyboards have mostly died out and are pretty niche nowadays. Back then I used a Nokia E71, it's a good 'smartphone' that allowed you to type quickly but the buttons are pretty small and your specified needs were 'big buttons'.

You might be looking at a Blackberry if you want something that came in 2018.

However if your old man did not like IOS then likely Android is also out of a question and you're after a feature phone, problem is features phones with QWERTY are pretty hard to find new.

  • Possibly could use an Android touch screen phone, but would need to have the Home Screen modified to just show large icons for phone and text.

    • there are launchers designed for elders. have a look at em :)

    IPhone XS Max

  • one more options would be any mode else of big screen, also comes with high volume of sound output & ringtone.
vibration function is usually exist, the extra high volume of the sound might not.

  • I assume you took almost everything either off the 4s or moved it to another screen and just left the phone and message icons on the first screen. You can de clutter quite a bit from the phone.

  • Thanks for all the advice.
Found an old windows phone (ozbargain from years ago) that I customised just to have phone and sims icons.
Working well and he seems to like it. Will upgrade later to the Android with a customised launcher once he has got use to the touch screen.
