Moving Back to Australia from Singapore. Help!

Long time no see, OzBargainers!

I'm moving back to Australia after 4 years in Singapore albiet moving to Melbourne (previously from Perth).
Where are bargains to be had?

In particular, we'll need:

  • fridge
  • washer/dryer
  • dishwasher
  • car (I miss cars!)

I've been away long enough for Australian notes to look weird. Help!

It's a broad question because I'm looking for broad guidance. If you aren't able to give any help, you might have saved youself some time and effort and scrolled on.

Or you could have saved some typing and say you're lazy

        Okay:

There are lots of different cars on the market these days, unlike the 1950's. Many different deals by different manufacturers. I am sure you will find something to your liking

Fridgers, washers and dishwashers you can find at retailers like JBHifi or The Good Guys. Depending on the day you will probably find that at least one of those items will be in stock and have a deal going on. I can promise you that.

Just a bit of broad guidance

    wrong site

    go back to https://www.cheapcheaplah.com/

    • Four years of tracking Cheap Cheap Lah already :o)

Just search whatever you want except for cars, not much cars deals here.

Close to boxing day there are plenty of white appliances deals.

    • Buy a couple from one store and get a discount and also save on delivery and installation.

Do you need some sentimental cane beatings for chewing gum? Slam a door on your cat's tail, maybe?

  • Yes, there will be a price shock moving back to Australia. The cost of living in Australia is about twice that of Singapore. I feel your pain.

    • Only if you exclude rental from that and ignore having same quality of life to compare.

    • Yeah nah. Singapore is now #1 in the world!

      • God the humidity - I ended up chaffed from head to foot walking anywhere in Singapore.

  • Really if you want help, get a little more specific, eg what size fridge.

  • Why you coming back OP, Sg is beautiful.

Not sure where in Melbourne you will be , but if it is South East, we just bought a fridge from Harvey Norman scratch n dent centre, attached to their Dandenong store.

The new fridge is a 500+ litre, bottom mount freezer variety, stainless, F&P or Bosch or LG ( I can’t remember which - it arrives on Saturday - but I know it is not a cheap Chinese brand) delivered for under $1000. One tiny dent on the side, that won’t be seen in the fridge alcove.

They had other white goods as well. It may not be massively cheap, although we saved about $600.

If you are after furniture, look up Casey Auctions on their Facebook page.

I went to the Harvey Norman scratch and dent store in Richmond, then walked next door to their proper store, and worked out a deal on new stuff that was cheaper than anything from their scratch and dent stuff. (And not scratched or dented).

    • I've previously scored some bargains at a scratch and dent outlet in Perth. Thanks for the heads up!

      • You can save even more at Harvey Norman. Check your PMs.

There is, also, a Harvey Norman scratch and dent place in Bridge Rd, Richmond. There is a Breville, Kambrook, Phillips outlet place on Smith St, Fitzroy.

Wait for a deal on eBay with 10-20% off Good Guys. Should be another one soon. Stack with discounted eBay vouchers and a Good Guys own discounts on whitegoods.

    • Don't disagree but if you don't mind refurbished for the Breville, etc, stuff you can get half price - and they come with a 12 month "fix it" warranty.

  • OP, care to share why do you move back?

    • Quality of life, cost of living. Singapore is now #1 in the world for cost of living! Winning!

Mate, once you factor in the obligatory, nay, essential smash avocadoes, the 7 cups of barrista single origin coffees, weekend binge, the cost of living is astronomical here.

true Melbournians know where to go so you don't pay through the nose.

@try2bhelpful: You'll still pay through one orifice or another.

            • @[Deactivated]: not if you know what you are doing?

              • @try2bhelpful: most importantly, true Melbournians can outrun african gangmembers to avoid getting bashed

                /jk

                • @payton: No, true Melbournians know that some of the best, well priced, food you can get is from African restaurants. We also know not to listen to the dog whistling of the shock jocks and our (temporary) PM.

      • Thanks for sharing! I have also been told higher property price and education in sg. Love the food and convinence there though.

  • I'd personally start in a fully furnished place with a spare room/space for furniture, and then slowly buy up from Gumtree and sales on here. Trying to get everything at once means there's things you'll overpay on, there'll probably be delivery delays/stuff ups, it hits the bank account all at once, and it adds to the already big task of shifting countries.

    • Plus, it also gives you time to check out some items in person.
