Is This Deal on Diamond Studs Any Good?

I don't know much about purchasing jewelry but want to get a decent gift for the Mrs.

Is this deal reasonable? What do you guys think?

Any tips on determining if the price is any good on deals like these please?

As most will pipe up here, diamonds are inherently worthless in reality but have an artificially constrained supply and heavy marketing to create demand. In essence, you not only want to consider larger size but more clarity and intensity as well as different types of cuts have different price values. Depends if she likes yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum etc and the shape of the metalwork that goes with it. It's a really subjective thing as well as whether or not it's a deal. I would say $3-400 for a diamond anything isn't really on the expensive side but it's not 'nice' either, might as well be sparkly Swarovski glass crystals at that spec.

Any diamond at retail is gonna be overpriced. But IMO diamonds are symbolic of violence and a lot of other yucky stuff - google will tell all for anyone interested - so a good price is hard to ascertain. There is plenty of other pretty but useless stuff to affix to our bodies should we feel the need, and for much cheaper too.

    Buy from De Beers.

  • Maybe look at white moissanite or synthetic diamond studs? Moissanite has more brilliance (the sparkling effect) and keeps it a bit longer when it gets dirty (something that happens to studs when hair keeps brushing against them), or synthetic diamonds are cheaper again for the same compound without impurities (plus who looks that closely at someone's ear to identify whether or not there's inclusions in there to work out if it's a natural diamond?)

  • There are many independent jewellers around. Michael Hill, Prouds etc are where I bought jewellery when I was 18 and clueless.

Is the Mrs someone who wants something personal? I know mine sure is. Is ethically sourced diamonds a factor for her?

I started by googling independent or ethically sourced jewellers for this Christmas. I found there were plenty of options and many who have an online shop. Cutting it close now though for time.
