Does PPSR checks reveal Odometer reading rewinds?

Just realized that PPSR and redbook reports are pretty much the same thing, however, I realised that redbook reports come with an odometer reading check, just wondering if this is provided in PPRS reports as well or if there is any other way to verify odometer readings.

redbook reports come with an odometer reading check

How do they do this? I guess some sort of reasonableness test but I imagine it is full of disclaimers.

if there is any other way to verify odometer readings.

Check logbook service odometer entries vs dates and look for any inconsistencies. Far from accurate though.

    • My understanding was the "odometer reading check" was simply checking that the kilometres recorded one year weren't lower than the year before.

  • Safety checks in NSW records odometer reading.

    • It does, but there is no way to drag that information back out it seems.

I recently restored a 2010 motorcycle that had been crashed. The speedo was smashed off it and required a new one. As the old owner lied about the amount of km the bike had done, when I went to the RMS to re-register the bike, the woman noted “oh, zero km… is it a brand new bike?”

This prompted me to ask, “no, it’s not new, it’s got a replaced speedo unit due to damaged, can you tell me what the last recorded km reading was at its last rego check?” And her answer was “no, we don’t have any way to access that type of information…”

So, I do not know why the km are noted on the RWC, if it just goes into some data black hole.

      • It is odd that they record it and don’t do anything with t. Would be a fairly easy way to help stop odometer tampering. Ie when you go to re-register they question you if the reading is lower. Of course it isn’t fool proof, but a simple check.

        • Yeah, I thought this would be exactly what it would be for. I dont know, maybe it is future feature implementation? It would be nice to get a PPSR check with the last recorded KM on it.

        • What happens when they record it incorrectly though? Considering how bad people are at entering numbers correctly, you'd almost certainly end up with a lot of vehicles being accidentally flagged as being tampered with, and there would be no way to prove that it wasn't just an accidental entry.

          • @jorf: Checking it annually as part of the Insoection is unlikely to pick up too many errors, especially as it is done electronically now. When the data is entered by the inspector get a flag that says it’s wrong and he can go back out to the car to check. All it would take is a reinspection from a pink slip provider to check the kms again if there was an error previously. I’d rather risk the typos and have a more robust system.
