WiFi pack for traveling and in the air?

Hi,

I saw some people bringing a small portable device on planes that allows them to have WiFi whilst in air and traveling.

What is it? I looked it up before and found the name and saw it was quite expensive but forgot what it was

  • you can get satellite wifi dongles, no idea if they work at that speed. The airline would get shitty if they knew you were using it.

i have used an Iridium GO! at work (not on a plane) - data is very expensive.

probably a wifi dongle/wifi hard drive

Yeah this, it's probably a hard drive with wifi to access movies on it etc, not internet access. Those with internet are very likely either getting it onboard from the plane, or during take off and landing when the plane is fairly low towers are in range of 3g/4g etc.

Satellite data is silly expensive and you may have trouble from inside the plane without a clear view of the sky, even on a ship it's borderline unusable for anything but email. Things may improve if SpaceX has its way.

Are people really that out of touch with reality that they can't live without WiFi on the plane for a few hours?!
