[NSW] Free Hot Breakfast & Chat for Those Doing It Tough Every Sunday @ Vinnies, Prince Alfred Park (near Central Station)

650

In light of the recent posts about meals and companionship during Christmas, I thought I'd share what I volunteer for.

Every Sunday, a group of volunteers heads out to Prince Alfred Park at 9am - 11am to give those in need a hot meal and companionship.

All are welcome! No RSVP required. Just show up, line up and eat up! :)

We'll also be there to offer a chat with anyone wanting one.

This runs 52 times a year like clockwork.

If you're thinking about volunteering, either click through to the page or PM me for details. Requirements are WWCC and Brekkie Van/Night Patrol training (NSW).

    Who the charity helps:
    General community in Australia

    Basic Religious Charity Status:
    Yes

Don't support misleading organisations that pretend to be a charity when they're registered as religious. Support ones like vinnies that help people not further religious agendas.

General community in Australia could mean all of the above though.

    • +6

I prefer to support any organization who wants to help those people in need, based on religious or not. Unlike u who probably never bother to help but busy commenting on the net or has other agenda to bash those who’s willing to help

        A male fish. Welcome!

    • dang, i dont fit into any of those categories.

Well both Vinnies and Salvos are religious charities. The whole Vinnies ethos is drawn from (surprise) Vincent de Paul who was a Catholic priest.

      • Vincent de paul is officially a non religious charity. Look at both links above.

I wonder why salvation army only declared themselves to be a religious charity and don't specify how they help people.

        • It's a formal thing because of the breadth of their services. The Salvation Army also invests heavily as a church.

The point I'd make is outside of org structures, both Vinnies and Salvos would not hesitate to say they are a religious charity.

Edit: just as a brief overview-

Salvos does work in homelessness, social work, employment, abuse, drugs/alcohol + youth counselling, aged care, court work, and family services.

Vinnies focuses strongly on homelessness/poverty. Which might explain their difference in scope (Salvos obviously more 'general').

    • This suggests that Vinnies is also religious: https://www.vinnies.org.au/page/About/Spirituality/

Just gona say i live down the road from the salvos church in my town, they help anyone of any religion… Spread properganda elsewhere, i actually take offence knowing how much they do to help people in my area.

Im also not religious but have donated my time to help them move people ect when they are short handed, or mow a lawn for an elderly person.

      Shame on you :/

  • I reckon the deal police will come after you for this one!

Is it safe? There are lots of aggressive beggars/muggers around those parts.

    • Depends on the time of day really. Mornings after 7am would be generally safe.

Edit: Prince Alfred Park seems more safe than Belmore Park though.

    • +3

It is, our clients get along very well with us. :)

We have had cases where they stand up for us in bad situations, so I would say it is safe.

      • -7

That's all good for you. But what about the public?

        • +2

The public will be fine. This has been going on for a long time, in a lot of places with no issues. Op is doing something to help, you are just being a dick. Looks like Santa will be bringing you coal this christmas.

            @brendanm:

The public will be fine. This has been going on for a long time, in a lot of places with no issues.

I'm sure you don't have a source for that, but feel free to prove me wrong. Contrary to your assertion, OP just confirmed that there have been bad situations.

If naïve OzBargainers rock up to this without street smarts there could be trouble.

Op is doing something to help, you are just being a dick.

I'm really not, but thanks for the personal attack.

Looks like Santa will be bringing you coal this christmas.

            Santa doesn't exist.

            • @Scrooge McDuck: The worst I've seen is verbal abuse, but our clients are good with keeping troublemakers from causing any more trouble. It is still a rare event for this to happen.

Should there be violence then we disengage, pack up and leave. Never had to do so personally. I do feel safe there, there is a very high level of respect in the community.

            • @Scrooge McDuck: If it were common, the media would be all over it, they love stuff like that.

"There have been bad situations", there are more fights at soccer matches every week, any pub/club on any given night etc etc.

              Just making an observation.

I'd Santa doesn't exist who brings my presents?

        • If the Sunday morning crowd gets a bit too scary for you just give a toot on your rape whistle and you'll be okay

  • This sounds great. Does anyone know of a VIC equivalent?

  • Religious or not op you guys are doing good, dishing out free food and accompanying those in tough times! More practical than kb trolling!

  • Strayfire, just wanted to say thank you for volunteering and helping those in need.

I spent all my money on bargain priced SSDs and Xmas shopping. I’m officially doing it tough now.

See you guys Sunday, hopefully they’ll have wifi

  • At first I thought it said [NSFW] and then I read "Hot" and clicked it. How disappointing :(

  • Thank you and your colleagues for helping those vulnerable people. I would like to help too. Merry Christmas

  • Thanks for your service and support to the local community.

What food do you serve and generally how many people do you get coming every week?

    • We always serve cereal, hot drinks followed by bacon and eggs with white bread. Sometimes we do pancakes, banana bread, hot dogs or Christmas themed food.

We serve about 80 regulars, but we do want more people to come and part of that is word of mouth.

      • Cool up in Katoomba we get around 20-30 people maybe total once a month.

I have been missing the last few ones but the ones I do make it to there are some cool regulars.

It is a vegetarian lunch that happens once a month.

I don't volunteer a lot but am interested in it.
