Recommendations for a USA Data Sim

Will be travelling to the US for three weeks during the New Year. I need a data sim with unlimited 4G LTE and mobile hotspot/tethering available.

Anyone have recommendations? Was going to just walk into an ATT or T-mobile shop and enquire since I know they've got some tourist friendly deals such as the ATT $65 unlimited data option but was wondering if I will have any issues buying those products since I'm visiting from Australia.

Thanking everyone in advance. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  • I'll jump in with some side comments. Just got back from Ny/Mississippi/San Fran. Metro was the cheapest we found and had patchy coverage. The good deals seemed to be thin on the ground.

Lyca mobile seemed to have the best deal (https://www.lycamobile.us/) but I just could not find their sim on the ground (ie NYC) - so make sure you get it posted somewhere you can pick up.

  • I bought a couple travel sims from simsdirect who post here.
    I bought one of these:

    and two of these:

We drove from DC to Miami and back again.
I found the first sim (5GB) very unreliable for data. Really regretted this purchase.
The smaller sims (3GB) my daughter and wife used - and they were fine - much better coverage and generally happy with those ones.

    • +1

Did you try the 5Gb sim in one of the other phones? The supported bands/frequencies of phones vary a lot. Disregard if you did.

      • You know, we discussed it but never did.
However I think there is definitely something in your comment as my wife and daughter found they had different levels of success with the same sim. My daughter on an iPhone had much better connectivity than my wife on a Xiaomi.

  • US mobile plans are the worst. Not being able to walk into a supermarket and buy a sim is crazy.

    • Walmart sells sims

      • Yes as long as you don't mind paying the $9 or was it $10US just for the sim (AT&T)
