Sony PlayStation Classic $89 at JB Hi-Fi

760

Looks like JB Hi-Fi have followed the lead of The Gamesmen, but this will be much cheaper if you live near a JB, but not Gamesmen. Maybe this will be a drop across the board?

Reviews don't seem too positive, so whether this will be worth it is up to you!

Same here. And this happens only 3 weeks later :(

        Credit card with Price protection?

    • +5

Given how well Nintendo has done with the NES and SNEE Mini, and how well PlayStation is doing as a brand, I don’t think anyone would have predicted these sorts of price drops so quickly (if at all).

      • +9

NES/SNES Minis didn't drop for awhile though - one thing Nintendo really does well in selling is nostalgia, and when they do it, they do it well. Sony unfortunately dropped the ball with the PS Classic given its shoddy quality - not too surprised it's bombed. Hell at least half of the games are not ones people associate with the PS1 days.

      • i think literally anyone who saw the pre-release reviews would have been able to tell these things would fall in price real quick.

    • +3

I cancelled my pre-order after I saw how bad the console was.

      • What’s wrong with it?

        • +6

I don't own it, but the common complaints seem to be poor performance, very basic emulation, disappointing choice of games and not using DualShocks. But if you really wanted to play those games, I reckon $89 is getting tempting.

        • Everything.

      • Yeah I did the same after watching some reviews online. Glad I did.

    • +1

On the same boat. Just deciided to return to Amazon and price match at HN with Shipster covering the postage.

    • +4

Could have got a PSTV for that much.

I can see this failure going under $50 eventually

    • Landfill, surprised they don’t recall the product completely.

    • I can see this failure going under $50 eventually

And probably like $20-$30 these will be had for used.
Maybe a new, much improved, model is on the way also.

Rubbish, buy an original second hand

  • There are some good mods you can do with a raspberry pi or simply hacking it to add more games but then you are paying just for a case and controllers.. Tempting

    • +3

The games run better emulated on a modded SNES mini.

  • Simple research prior to the release would have shown this was always gonna be the case. There was plenty of comprehensive reviews sh*t canning this product. It's a shame as I was looking forward to this :(

Got a $10 voucher at JB. $79 is tempting but not amazing

Sony did the worst job imaginable on this

  • +1

    Amazon will price match soon.

  • +1

Well can’t blame people, the snes is much more appealing and has more vibrant colours compared to the ps1, kids obviously would choose the snes design way over the ps1.

These posts are killing me. Also paid $150 for this P.O.S

    • +5

haha, why would you pay 150 for it that was a terrible price.

      • +2

        Win some, lose some.

        • +4

I think with these retro system remakes it's all lose, every time.

    • I paid $120 after the Amazon 20% cashback but returned the POS after I realized how bad Sony rushed it out

  • Wait for Amazon and collect cashback rewards too.

  • It's a pile of doody. That's why

    • But you support the deal?

      • It's a pile of doody

Support Mr Hanky during the festive season!

      • I do. I'm a sucka that 150. And am a ps fan boy. Just don't like this.

  • Has had a price drop world wide not just in Australia.
$30usd rrp drop in America etc.

Actually not a bad unit the games are ok but due to licenceing issues some flagships not ok the system but that’s easily fixed thanks to it being easily modded.

    Will buy at $50

    • So this deal isn't good?

bought an original console at a garage sale 2 weeks ago for $3. planning on gutting it and replacing insides with a raspberry pi/emulator and wireless controllers.

    • +2

Just mod the thing and buy a stack of blank CDs. I busted mine out recently and threw in my old wireless PS2 remote, it's proper dope.

      • How did you mod original ps1 ?
I know they used to have to soldier in a special chip (which I thought would be hard to source these days) .

      • the console is stuffed. bought it solely for the case.

        • I'll throw you a 20+postage if you shove the innards in a package and mail it to me.

I'd like to throw one inside the PS1 slim I gutted the other day when I swapped the faulty disc drive of mine with another one.

I just don't see the point of this.

I understand the 16 bit mini consoles as the games back then were a different style (2D platformers etc). Emulation works well and the graphics don't look dated as they're perfect for the game styles.

The PlayStation though was the first of the modern style of games (3D), so for this you're just playing current era style games with rubbish 3D graphics.

To be fair, I did buy the mini SNES, played for about an hour and reminisced about my first real console from my childhood. It was cool.

It was then boxed up and put away. Hasn't been touched since.

    • rubbish 3D graphics.

The original Wipeout game was awesome IMO.

  • Buy an original PSX and get a PSIO

    • +2

Chipped ps2 does the ps1 fine too

    • Cheapest to just buy a PS3 as they play PS1 discs and you get a Blu-ray player. Most Cashies will sell a PS3 slim for around $30 to $40

  • $89 at EB now also for their Boxing Day sale

  • Sony really dropped the ball on this one.

Political clusterfeth aside, I'm not enjoying the game and pretty much stopped playing it - and for reasons entirely aside from DICE/EA/Pat Soderlund stupidity. Feels like they've been chasing CoC too hard, and it no longer really feels like Battlefield compared to 4, 3, BC2, and those before. Don't get me wrong, those were all different to one another, but they still felt like BF. BF1 was a lot different, and this one continues to move away from classic BF.

Having said that, $39 isn't too expensive and might be worth a try - especially if you liked BF1.
