Low rise alloy strongbox frame, front suspension, 18-speed Shimano thumb shift and derailleur, front disc brakes, alloy rims…$168
    Posting this on ozbargain…$0
Not realising it's an expensive bicycle shaped object…priceless

They sell you the front suspenson, thumb shift, disc brakes etc. as separate products. If you choose to assemble these unrelated products into something that resembles a bicycle, you do so at your own risk.

  • Awful. Anybody who buys a bike from a supermarket deserves the unrideable s**t-heap they'll inevitably get. And that's assuming you can even get it together in the first place.

Do yourself a favour and support your local bike shop.

I will admit though, my first two slightly real bicycles were BSO's…insanely good for building strength though. Due to the sheer torture it takes to get them moving.

My last BSO…I took apart piece by piece to throw in the skip, some uni student comes up and says 'Don't throw it away, someone else can use it'…I replied, 'No…they can't'.

Literally every single piece of 'equipment' on that bike was smashed, broken, snapped etc. Wasn't due to abuse but sheer power through my legs, it couldn't handle the torque/power output. Ran her through what was screwed and she actually agreed that it probably would be best to throw it :P I'm surprised the frame was still straight…

    • I wonder how these $49 jobs from Coles are going?

      • Now that is a good deal! Reason being is, $50 is a reasonable price for a BSO. You know just what your getting for that price :)

    • The problem with buying from supermarkets is people get bikes that do not fit properly and/or are not assembled and adjusted correctly.
If you have a friend who knows bikes, both can be avoided. The components on these bikes are OK for normal use.
Just don't try jumps or the spokes will break. Don't crash.
They are infinitely better than the 3-speed bikes back when I were a lad.

      • I keep breaking spokes on my Alex rims through normal, casual riding. They're supposed to be quality rims! (Edit)Upon doing some research on the interwebs, it appears many others have big troubles with Alex rims breaking spokes. Stay away peoples!

Support your local bike shop??? Nooooo!
I purchased my latest bike from a bike shop, it's a Giant X-Road style. The assembly was shocking and a few parts had been swapped off it. When I had bothered to go back about it a couple of months later the shop had closed and gone out of business.
My advice, buy from a supermarket.
