That seems okay for something deep fried

      & contain just 45% chicken.(mirror.co.uk)

Is the UK recipe the same as Australia?

      Is 45% bad?
Nuggets have a coating, flavouring and other things to make them a nugget.

    • Steggles tempura chicken nuggets are 48% chicken. Ingham's nugs are 54%. Woolworths brand 53%. This actually makes me feel better about Maccas nuggets.

      • If you look at one chicken nugget, the batter is only the coating so chicken wise, you really should have more than 80% at least.

Doesn't it make you wonder what's the filler to drop the chicken % to only 45%?

That's like getting fish and chips but it's only 45% fish.

        • Doesn't it make you wonder what's the filler to drop the chicken % to only 45%?

I dont need to wonder, the ingredients are above.

The other main things that are in the nugget are water, flour and oil.

You need to remember that ingredient percentages are of the ingredients that go into the product and are not the final product.

Water is an ingredient that will cook out of the nugget as it fries so if it is true that chicken is 45% of the ingredients the actual number will be higher once it is cooked and some of the water has been removed.

That's like getting fish and chips but it's only 45% fish.

A meal of fish and chips would be less than 45% fish as at least 50-60% of the meal would be chips.

Battered fish is only around 50% fish (same meat content as nuggets) and the other 50% is batter.

So your fish and chips meal is only about 25% fish.

          • @spaceflight: 'Battered fish is only around 50% fish (same meat content as nuggets) and the other 50% is batter'

Not to sure which fish and chips shop you go to where your fish is 50% batter..

            • @PuppieWayne: As an ingredient batter makes up about 50% of what it's coating.

              Batter is milk/water/beer and flour.
Flour is good at absorbing liquid and liquids are heavy so when you dip your fish into the batter it picks up a lot of weight.

It might not look like 50% batter, but that's not how ingredient percentages work.

Fish and chip shops don't have to list their ingredients so finding a non packaged example is hard.

If you look at a packet example https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/725770/i-j…
              That's 56% fish so 44% batter.

Looking at the photo (which is a package shot so yes will make it look slightly better than it is) you would think that the better is probably less than 10% but it is still about 44%

Just checked. Bought on their own it's $5.95 for six nuggs. A total rip. $2 is about what they should be.
