What happened to the drinking fountains we had when we were at school many decades ago? No kids are drinking from them?

    • +10

Kids these days with their fancy gameboys and iPods and containers for transporting liquid.

We had one refrigerated bubbler, always a huge line at that one.

    • Well, a little over two decades ago the bubblers at Sydney schools had this going on.

    • +2

I thought that too but then I remember one kid had a water bottle frozen and wrapped in a tea towel. Great idea. Cold water. Bubblers did always taste funny.

    • +1

Marketing taught the children that containers of water are a status symbol and that containers of water are healthier than cheaper tap water.

I had to use bubbler drinking fountains. They were disgusting breeding grounds for every germ imaginable.

    • It's full of BPA, phthalate and lead in the fountains….

I never understood why re-useable bottles were that much more expensive. Put some milk in them or something. When I was a kid cups were made by Nutella. Or came with happy meals. That's the way I remember it anyway.

  • Who can tell us about the build quality of these bottles? Regardless of $1 or $4 each.

Going on a camping trip soon, so three or four decent one litre bottles would be ideal. Thanks

Bought 2 last time they were $1.
Can't complain for the price. Best feature is that they're pliable, so you can squeeze them and get a fair suck of the sauce bottle when you're thirsty. None of this slow-flow frustrating nonsense.

Worst thing about them is the girth of the bottle. Fractionally (literally 2-3mm, so annoying!) too big for the cup holders in 2 out of 3 of my cars. Another thing is that the twist-top valve can sometimes come off the rails (best way I can describe the times when twisting the cap yields no water flow). Pretty simple to fix with some upward leverage (I've used a butter knife) while twisting the cap, though I wouldn't count on your thirsty child being able to do it.

Ultimately, it's a sufficient water vessel. Good value for $1 and a better bottle than the pop-top variants which are usually $5+. Going to buy another couple.

      • Thanks mate, I'll give them a go.

  • Site still says $4

    • Date still says Wednesday..

    • Oops.. forgot that BIG w catalogues don't start until Thursday :)
