There must be a typo in there somewhere.

      2109 maybe? 2091? 3019?

The game has certainly aged poorly.

Yakuza series has better system and combat and story and graphics

one game is released in 1999 and one in 2005. Maybe when they were planning the game in the 90s they thought "lets try to copy the gameplay style of a game coming out in 10 years from now"

        ….

  • SEGA’s most requested re-release of all time

    OutRun, thank you very much.

    • -1

Outrun was re-released on the ps3 I think.

      • OutRun Online Arcade, is a game for the 360 and PS3, that you haven't been able to buy for like half a decade as well, that was just a scaled back online version of OutRun 2006, with a bunch of missing features to boot. But if they re-released that on PS4/Xbone/Switch I'd do a backflip.

But mostly, my comment was one part jest because OutRun (the original) has been ported to everything under the sun, just the other day I was playing the Master System version on a Nokia 3310, you can basically play it on anything at this point.

And two, my comment was also venting my frustration about NO version of OutRun or it's spinoffs/sequels ever being included in the numerous Sega Mega Drive collections (almost all of which I own, including the recent Switch version), yet they are gonna be releasing it in about a week or so on the eShop at just over 10 bucks on it's own. (profanity) you. And (profanity) me, for buying it separately on the 3DS, and on Switch the second it comes out.

    • Mine would be Outrun 2/2006. It's a shame it can't be legitimately purchased digitally anywhere at the moment from what I can gather.

God YES. I have an Xbox 360 store kiosk with two controllers and literally all it gets used for 99% of the time is OutRun 2 and Tony Hawk 3 split screen. It's all that keeps me going.

As far as playing on a more modern machine goes, the PSP port of OutRun 2006 was really good, like REALLY good, like it's exactly the same game just at 30 FPS instead of 60 kinda good. And it runs really well on the PPSSPP emulator, that runs on just about anything. I've been burning through it (and many other classics) on my recently purchased NVIDIA Shield TV, with the resolution running at 5X the original PSP's, and with 3X upscaling on textures. To put it simply, PPSSPP takes a game that looked nice on a PSP's 4.3 inch screen, and makes it so I can actually read the Ferrari logo in perfect clarity on a 55 inch tele.

It almost makes up for OutRun 2006 being one of the handful of PS2 games I own that DOESN'T work with my fat PS3. Almost

You can't buy any version of OutRun 2 or 2006 digitally anywhere, including OutRun Online Arcade, all you can do is buy the original (with edited out Ferarri logos) on 3DS, and (in a week or so) that same port of the arcade original on Switch.

If you wanna try somewhat of a half step between the 80s original's style, and the 2/2006 modernity, pickup a copy of Sega Classics Collection on PS2. It's 10 (or so, it's been a while) games from the Mega Drive era remade in 3D. Some are hit, some are miss, OutRun is great. It's pretty much shot for shot identical to the 80s original, but your car is a (average at best, tbh) 3D model and it's like playing OutRun 1.5, nowhere near 2's greatness yet, but on the way.

        • You have an Xbox 360 store kiosk? You don't run a YouTube channel by any chance do you Duke? 😀

Great insight you have there on the Outrun games. I learned something new today and never realised there was what looked like a remastered version of the original game. I had to look up footage as I never owned a PS2. You clearly love the series!

I will need to setup PPSSPP at some point now that I also own a Shield TV. Thanks for sharing the info. It's been a few years since I last played the PSP version but I remember it running and looking great natively on the console.

Let's hope Sega manage to re-release Outrun 2/2006 at some point. Perhaps a compilation with all their awesome racing games. Including Scud Racer, the Daytona USA games etc.

          • @cheepo: I do not. As much as I love rambling about games and shit, there's a hundred million people already on YouTube who do it better. And also don't have an (almost) 3 year old running around yelling at me in the background.

It was part of the Sega 3D Ages series for PS2 (there's an Ages series for Saturn which is just Mega Drive re-releases, there's an Ages series for Switch too which is mostly just arcade / MD ports as well, the PS2 versions were called 3D Ages, as they were 3D versions of the MD games), released in the mid 00s or so, my copy of the set has the giant colored in ratings logo which only became a thing in 2005 so that timing fits. Anyway, it annoys the shit out of me that they didn't follow that idea more, or even port those versions, later on, in the Switch series of Ages. Yeah, sure, I'm sure the OutRun 1 arcade port will be great, it was great on 3DS and one of the few games I truly enjoyed the 3D on, but I've had that experience before, and it cost less, give me something shiny and new.

It's probably the most easy to setup emulator I've got on there so far, pretty much all the settings are fine as they are, just turn on upscaling and higher resolutions, and point the guy to your ~ROMS~ legally acquired digital files of games you obviously own, and you're set. Dolphin is pretty bloody easy too once you figure out almost all games run flawlessly at 30% clockspeed.

We'd all love it, but they can't because of the Ferarri branding deal expiring years back. That's why the 3DS (and upcoming Switch) version has the logo on the back of the car edited so it looks similar but nowhere near identical. The 2/2006 games don't just have a little logo to edit out, they have the whole car's body, the horse logo, the written logo, the actual name and branding in the menus, on what, like 20 odd cars at least? Wouldn't be worth the effort I'd imagine. They could always negotiate some deal to do a re-release but from what I gather, Sega and Ferarri don't seem to have much interest in working together again. That being said, a couple years ago Yu Suzuki did say OutRun 3 would be happening, but it's been a while since then. Some people lose their shit over the Ferarri stuff, I couldn't care less, I mean, they're nice, but just give me that smooth, ultra fast, arcadey gameplay and I'm fine, you could put a (profanity) Toyota logo on the car and I wouldn't care if it played the same. Or just, you know, no logo, so you don't get in this mess again, Sega.

As for Daytona, my local pub has a two player arcade unit siting in the corner, full sized seats and all, it's great. First arcade game my kiddo has got to play and she loves it. I mean, she spun the car around and crashed me, causing the timer to tick out and my two bucks being wasted in about 30 seconds, but she loved it. Now we just kinda sit there for a few without putting any money in and let the demo mode play. Plus you can buy Daytona for like 5 bucks on the Xbox store right now in HD fancy pants style, I have no bone to pick with that.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: I honestly would happy for any workout Sega would implement to get the game released again. That includes using generic cars with no branding at all of need be. It's not the first time they've had to pull one of their games due to licensing issues so I hope it's something they will completely avoid if they ever get around to making another Outrun game.

It's great to have Daytona on a home consoles but it's just not the same without driving it in the cab of your used to it playing that way. Awesome your enjoying these these memories with your daughter as those original cabs seem to becoming scarce. Look out for Daytona Championship USA (2017) too if you're fan of the original game. If your in Melbourne, Playtime at Crown Casino have a twin cab.

You would think that, if Shenmue was the most requested re-release of all time, they'd at least update the graphics. And ideally fix some of the laborious nature of the tasks.

I would have bought it, except this re-release stinks. I'm very disappointed.
