Yes, you can plug it directly in to the PS4 via USB and use that way.

I ended up putting a 1tb Samsung SSD in the PS4. Absolutely no problems since then.

Yes it can definitely be used on a Mac (any USB Hard Drive really) but you will need to format it in Disk Utility to be Mac compatible.
