While this is a great deal, I find every Shell service station I encounter to be at least 15cents more expensive per litre. I really drove from Melbourne to Gold Coast across the coast and this was very consistent

    • +1

You're not wrong at all, Metro fuel stations are consistently the cheapest and Shell/Coles Express are always at least 10c/L more expensive in Sydney. But you can combine offers and get up to 24c/L off which is great for big tank fill-ups.

      • Plus you get Flybuys and AMEX points to stack on that.

    • Just depends. Sometimes Shell is higher and other times its competitive in my area.
Got this offer last week whilst Shell Unleaded was 1.17.
That's 1.03 per litre using 0.04 shop docket as well. Great price.

  • You can combine this with 4c/L off coupon on docket and further 10c/L off if you spend $20 in shop for a combined 24c/L off Petrol.

As usual, if you don't use a fuel price checking application, you are likely to fall for the oldest game in the consumer ripoff playbook: Boost and discount.

I've yet to see a straighforward Flybuys/Coles Express offer that isn't easily beaten with 60 seconds of effort loading a comparison app. YMMV - but not in my neck of the woods!

ACCC found that consumers were losing more money by following these spending incentive programs than by not following them. As the participants think that they're coming out ahead.

When I use to shop at supermarkets I started only buying things from Ozbargain grocery lists and noticed that I was spending half the money. I thought I was doing pretty well but it turns out that the supermarkets were taking my money like a mug.

      • Agreed. I try to only use 'inducements' that happily line up with my own behaviour/needs. That approach - plus the standard OzBargain 'Loyalty=more-fool-you' dictum - seems to get the best results with the least self-inflicted pain.

      • +1

If you are a single person and don't really care about your health you can eat very cheaply through the 50% off lists for Colesworth. However the incentive programs are nice for the people who are time poor with families and don't have a range of supermarkets within a couple of KMs of their house.

I only get 6c off offers now, used to be 10c. 6c isn't enough to bring it below the others for me while 10c often did.

    • Didn't click on the OP's link, but I also got the 6c offer via email after using up the 10c offer few days back.

    • Yep, didn't think I'd used the 10c all that much but only got 6c this time around. Combine it with a Coles receipt for the 10c off.
Everyone complains that they're more expensive but they seem to be on par around me. Filled up at 98c with the last 10c off and a 4c receipt, which was around 8-10c cheaper than everyone else nearby.

Make your own informed choice - I use www.petrolspy.com.au

I've zero links to that or any other company but it's pretty good at what it does and has both a website and an app.

Coles Express? It's fast as no one is ever there, for a reason……..

    • the NSW fuelapp is good if you're nsw based

    • Great site.

But looking at my area (which has a number of petrol stations) the Coles servo is still only 8c dearer than the cheapest servo for 95 and above types of fuel. So If you use these discounts available to you, you will come out ahead.

  • +1

Apco/United still cheaper than this. Coles express is the worst.

  • ….and of course it's targeted…

  • Pm me if any going!

  • Lol they're 20-30c/l dearer than Costco for U91 and have been ripping Canberra motorists off for years. Meanwhile Barr fiddles with his toy trams.

    • -3

This deal is for the shell brand. It offers no waiting time to use a bowser, some good in store offers, alternative locations, etc. not sure why you are comparing it to Costco or u91

      • +1

I use 91 as do hundreds of thousands of other motorists. Costco will be cheaper by the same amount for 98 also. Yes if you go at certain times you'll queue, but there's an obvious reason for that. Apart from being dearer than the opposition generally (example provided by someone else on a previous OzB deal) ColesWorth have been responsible for keeping fuel prices outrageously high in Canberra for years. I have a Flybuys card and got this "offer" but it doesn't influence my spending, esp on fuel. I'd double neg this if I could, no offence to the OP.

        • +1

I use Costco too. Generally for U98 and diesel. The price differential makes it worth my while to go to Majura Park - with the added benefit of straightforward parking for Costco, Woolworths, Aldi and Bunnings.

At the moment, the U98 price differential between my nearest Coles Express (172.9) and Costco (Majura Park) @134.7 is a whole lot of stupid. I've run out of fingers and toes for that calculation. And it's cheaper still at Costco Moorabbin (Vic) - 124.7 - just a bit far to drive. Of course U98 in Melbourne is a whole lot cheaper than in Canberra. Even Coles Express prices seem to be in the range of 138-147, so you may benefit from offers like this if you stack your discounts. I'd prefer prices to be transparent and upfront. This sort of discounting on inflated pricing is mere obfuscation and shouldn't be rewarded.

Yes, as Possumbly notes, you do wait for a bowser - if you don't want to wait, choose your refueling time with a bit of thought (or look for those servos with ridiculously high prices - you know the ones). I also choose to send a message (OK, a squeak in a vacuum) by shopping where fuel costs are not hyper-inflated.

Mr Barr maybe fiddling with his trams. I'd like to think that he can fiddle with more than one thing at once.

I don't think that the deal should be negged - just wish that we could collectively give the finger to shoddy pricing practices that verge on deception. Humpf!

    • Yeah, if you look at FuelWatch in NSW you can see they are consistently higher than other petrol stations.

Wouldn't go as far to say 30c dearer here, but at least 10-15c. Which nulls any savings…

    • Costco only stock e10 and 98 not 91 in NSW

      • Ethanol mix must be provided under a NSW Govt mandate which is essentially based on utter bs.

    • You need a membership for that, and there's not that many stores in each state. Not a fair comparison.

But comparing them to Caltex/BP, etc is fine, and Shell is dearer than Caltex for sure.

      • You need membership of Flybuys also but yes a valid point.

        • +1

That's free. As opposed to $60/yr.

          • @lostn: No kidding. FB isn't "free" if you don't shop around I can assure you.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I have no idea what you mean, but I didn't pay any money for FB, and I do shop at Coles. I don't know how "shopping around" changes its cost or non-cost.

Meanwhile, $60 a year is not worth it for a few cents of savings on petrol and a long trip to get there plus queuing up. I don't shop at Costco and have no interest in doing so because their portion sizes are bigger than I can consume, so I'd be paying $60 just for 10-20c cheaper petrol. I think I would end up in the negative at the end of the year. I also put a higher value on my free time and convenience than the dime a liter savings.

              • +1

@lostn: It's simple enough. People chasing Flybuys points without checking competitor's prices - likely the majority of FB members - are costing themselves far more than $60 a year I can assure you.

Those "few cents" in fuel equate to about $16/fill for me. I'll leave you to work out how many fills it takes to recoup the membership fee even if you can't find other things of value in Costco or surrounding shops. Their roast chickens are huge and cheap, they have cheap car batteries a couple of times a year, cheap food and drink, and very good quality meat among other things.

                • @[Deactivated]: Based on my own experience - I'd recoup the Costco membership cost in two to three months (even when the price differential isn't so extreme).

And yes, their meat is good. Not 'cheap' - but very well trimmed and evenly cut. I hate how thin many of the local supermarkets cut steaks. It just doesn't work out well when you're looking to eat something that hasn't turned to leather.

Not so keen on their chooks. Yes, they're cheap - but I've found them a bit chewy and not terribly flavorsome.

  • I got 6 cent, but another fill 30L at local shell and get 1000 point. Works out to be better than 10.

  • +1

My wife always fall for this trick. We usually get the 4 cents discount from Caltex Woolworths but every time she gets this 10 cents off from Shell Coles she goes there. This happens once every month or two. Each time we end up spending more as Shell Coles is always 15 cents more than Caltex Woolworths. It happened again this morning but I have finally told her not to bother with it again!

  • 10c off not a discount when price is so jacked up.
Always found my strongest fuel savings were just by watching the ACCC fuel cycles and using 7 eleven lock in app.

  • When Coles does this the prices go up and compensate the discount. All other garages are cheaper and they have 4c off all the time…yes this is why Coles Express Garage stations are priced so much higher than the others…..Coles have been doing this for years.

  • Clearly everyone can see Coles Express
prices are heavily jacked up before discount.

    • With this discount, does Coles Express not become literally cheaper than every other competitor in your screenshot?

      • -3

Not really as I have to do all the below to get what others give directly.

        1. Activate this offer
        2. Purchase petrol at Shell Coles Express*
        3. Present your flybuys card at the time of purchase
        • +1

So which of the alternative retailers are selling at 105.9c/L in your photo?

          • @[Deactivated]: Here’s one with a cheaper retailer in the same area. http://imgur.com/fAICzW7, just need to pump the petrol to get the deal.

Edit: please don’t take it personally. I know you like posting Coles Express deals but I just find Coles is using deceptive techniques rather than giving real discounts. +0.10-0.10=0

            • @Rosace: Nothing personal, during my lunch break I saw in my area (SE Melbourne) that Coles has miraculously matched Woolworths and 7-11 petrol stations here. Admittedly Coles was at least 10c/L more yesterday, but suddenly they're at the same prices as the rest of them now - without a discount.

I've just checked petrolspy and the prices are still at yesterday's prices. No joke - opposite Brandon Park, 7-11 was 110.9c/L and the two Coles outlets were 6 cents more yesterday. Today they're all at 110.9c/L. Now after the discount that's cheaper than Costco, who normally undercut everyone because of their business model.

Shame that this deal excludes diesel.

I understand why they might exclude trucks filling up, but plenty of passenger cars use diesel as well.
