The quote from their blog:

We’ve made Pocket Weather World, and Pocket Weather World HD free for the next 24 hours:

Yes we’re insane, thanks for being so insensitive about it. We’re also a bit angry about that TUAW articles about a ‘revolutionary’ new way of getting temperatures on your iPhone (via push badges), yes something we did 2 years ago

Seriously though it’s a fun experiment, and we hope as many of you grab it as you can. Tell your friends, your pets, your annoying neighbours!

We also intend to publish all the figures from this experiment, including paid numbers after it stops being free. Also if it goes bad pictures of us sleeping on park benches, probably drunk, if we can even afford that…

Let me know when you make your AU versions free… basically useless with local weather source info.

Wow, you can't afford $2.49 but were able to afford an iOS device… If you read the above you'd figure out why they made the Pocket Weather World apps free.

      • Mate, I've spent hundreds of dollars of apps, but my point relates to this being near useless in Australia, basically providing the same info that the std weather app shows, which is NOT local data. They do have an AU specific app which does use BOM data, but choose not to offer the same deal.

        • They did not "choose" to offer the same deal, they could not because of licensing restrictions. That is explained in the whirlpool link below.

Your neg is baseless just because you think OZBarginers want to look at aussie weather. Even if you don't travel, you might want to see what the weather is doing somewhere else. Look outside, it's a big world out there.

Can this free (international) version (in its current state) at least provide some Australian data or none at all?

    • yes it can. just installed it and tried it. was at least able to add "sydney" and "melbourne".

Yes, but it doesn't use BOM data (source: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1148510&r…)

I would recommend these apps when travelling OS or for any of OZB's international visitors. The apps are very nicely designed and easy to use. I've had Pocket Weather AU for the iPhone for ages and it's awesome. The push notifications and badge icon are easily the best features.

  • THESE GUYS ARE GREAT. The only iOS app you'll ever need for Australian weather is their Pocket Weather AU - weather provided by the Bureau of Meteorology - I've used it for months - as accurate as you'll get - nice displays and as easy as to use - was happy to pay for it. I have around 1,000 apps - and this would be one of the three or four most used at least once a day.

  • i just went to the app store and it says $2.49… :(

Seems like a pretty crappy app.

    • i can't seem to be able to add any cities ???

      anyone else having problems ???

      • Yeah I am, getting a message saying connection error…

        • thanks… i thought it might have just been Virgin Mobile playing up again, but other apps seem to be working…

        • Here we go:

Important lessons: - free apps are popular - the first thing new users do is search for locations. The one thing we haven't optimised for.

        • thanks for that…

i guess i try and add locations next week… :S

        • Adding locations is working now. I had to force quit it to get it going.

  • I read that TUAW review, and wondered why they were so impressed with the temperature as a badge.

I'd love some new skins for the iPhone version, something a little cleaner, but I still recommend their Australian App,

It was one of the first decent weather apps for Australia. The Australian version with push notification is fantastic.

  • its not free for 24 hrs. its $2.49 now.
