Looking into Getting a New Android Phone + Suggestions on Any Upcoming Models

Hey guys, I am on the market for a new Android mobile phone. I am currently using the Huawei Mate 9 at this stage and it has been a great phone and still today. I recently finished up my contract and went with a sim only plan which saves me a heap of money too. My question is, is it worth upgrading to a new phone at this stage or wait it out for new models to come out so I can buy outright?

I am not looking to spend a lot, just as long as it works fine and have features such as expandable memory card size, one that works with Android Auto well on my Alpine head unit, a decent camera and battery life. Not really fussed on any other features to be honest lol.

I have been looking at brands such as:

  • Samsung (Which I can't justify on paying the price for)
  • Google
  • One Plus
  • Oppo
  • Huawei (although their new Mate 20 Pro doesn't have expandable memory which was a turn off lol)
  • Xiaomi

What do you guys suggest? Also in terms of where to purchase from too. Any help is much appreciated.
My budget can go up to $800.

Lol would never go near one of those things.

Everyone says that till you use it once in store… then your hooked

True, that's exactly what happened to me with the iPhone 3 and I've been hooked since!

Sorry I should have put that bit up too haha, I'm looking to spend up to $800.

    Pocophone F1 approx $430 —- flagship killer

Agreed it's a great phone, just be aware no NFC and no b28, which may or may not concern you.

    • Thanks for your feed back! Looks like the perfect phone for me at a good price, call me dumb but what does b28 mean? I've never used NFC on my phone anyway haha

      • Band 28 - a radio frequency used by some telcos (with other bands too) for their (4G) signals, such as Optus and Telstra.

        • That would mean that my Optus sim card will be compatible with the phone?

          • +1

@jimmytuan: It won't affect SIM compatibility - it means that the phone may (not necessarily, it depends on many factors) have slower data connections if your service is with Optus or Telstra in certain areas.

            • @HighAndDry: Thanks for the reply! I think I'm leaning towards this phone, looks the goods! Would you prefer the 6GB or 8GB ram out of the two? I can only seem to find the 6GB ram models.

              • @jimmytuan: No worries. I've no idea to be honest - from reading online the Pocophone is fairly light on memory usage so I think 6GB would be sufficient, but having more RAM is always better.

                • @HighAndDry: Looks like I'll be buying this phone. It fits everything I need in terms of features! Next up, where to buy one from.

                  • +1

                    @jimmytuan: I have the 6gb & it BCFin flies
bought from flipkart in India ,had friends on holidays purchased for me
very pleased with it , I use Aldi sim no problems,

EDIT Aus sellers on Ebay ,dunno who or how good they are

                    • @rickxs: I've been researching on trying to get one at a decent price, it looks like eBay is the only site that's selling at a good price. Doubt these will go down any sooner. But still happy with the price already!

For $800 OnePlus 6T is best bet. Great android experience. If you can wait a little more there is Nokia 9 to be released end of Jan. Based on leaks it has better camera and Android one experience.

Neither the newer One Pluses or Nokia's seem to offer compelling reasons to buy them now that they cost the same as other similar handsets.

    • Yeah I had a look at that one but then I was dissapointed at the fact that it didn't have expandable memory card slot. Thanks for the output by the way!

What is wrong with your current phone?

You've said "I am currently using the Huawei Mate 9 at this stage and it has been a great phone and still today. I recently finished up my contract and went with a sim only plan which saves me a heap of money too".

I would just stay on the sim only plan until you actually need a newer phone.

    • Besides the crack on the glass screen, It's starting to run slower now, especially when I've got it connected to my head unit for Android Auto. I thought I'd get a perspective on any Android phone that's current or future released to replace with my current one.

      • +1

        Ok, that changes the perspective.

  • mate 20 pro uses a new standard of expandable memory, so if you really needed to expand the memory you can

  • nokia 8.. good simple snappy phone, latest (and quick) OS upgrades (will get Pie) and only half your budget ;)

  • +1

In a similar situation. I was thinking to wait till nokia 9 or nokia 7.1 plus,

Nokia 7 plus has been very positively and was thinking of getting it but will wait till next round of nokias

    • I've read up on these new Nokia's and they sure have come a long way with their range. I'm sure it's affordable too for the specs you're paying for. But I think I am leaning myself towards the Xiaomi Pocophone F1.

      • Just be aware that the Pocophone runs MIUI which is is a heavily skinned version of Android.
It will contain several non-standards and non-removable apps and will require some minor readjustment to operating it.

I THINK this phone comes with the Google Play store included (many Xiaomi phones don't), however, you might like to confirm before purchasing.

      • don't get the xiaomi unless you want to be frustrated and want a new phone in 6 months time.
The specs are only 1/2 the story…

    • I choose Nokia's over Poco any day for Stock android and NFC. My experience with MIUI has been horrible.

  • +1

I haven't had any issues with my Huawei. It kills every Sony I have ever had.

  • +1

Hey. I would advise you two options:
    1. I think it is worth waiting for the spring and buy Samsung
    2. Mate 20 Pro is still very good.

    • Cheers for the opinion, I would have loved to go for the new phones coming out but I've got a budget to play around with too. I am not too fussed on the best features too. I have gone with the Xiaomi Pocophone F1.
